Eng Dies on 96 E300
This just started a couple of weeks ago. It started with the car just dying while coming to a stop at a read light or stop sign. Well yesterday it died while traveling down the road at around 40 mph. There are no check engine lights before or after it dies. It is as if the key was turned off but the gauges stay iluminated as though I were sitting with key on and engine off. Once I pull over to the side of the road and can put into park the car starts right back up and will run just fine. Anyone had this experience? apologies it is my 96 not 97

Fuel filters clogged? Fuel pump going bad?

I was thinking fuel shut off valve but not sure of symptoms.

I would say you have to start with all the appropriate filters. If you can get the engine to start, crack the fuel lines to see that fuel is being delivered properly. Anything unusual about start-up or idle, or does it seem fine until it dies? Don't forget about the tank strainer. Check the air intake - maybe a family of mice moved in.

How old is your K40 relay? Its feeds power to the SOV and causes intermittent faults when the PCB expands and contracts causing minute cracks to open resulting in the valve closing when power is lost "as if key were turned off".
Check for a fuel leak below the SOV oring too using a mirror and light. That can also cause the SOV to close.

It certainly sounds like all of the K40 stories I've read here. Could also be the SOV but I'd check K40 first, it lives under the black cover on the passenger side near the firewall.

If you go through the other stuff and it doesn't fix it, do consider the lift pump. When the car stalls, open the gas tank. If you get a big whoosh, it may be the lift pump. Replacing that pump solved all kinds of stalling problems I was having.

No check engine lamp after it dies means that you lost power to the computer. The fault is almost certainly the K40 relay module or the ignition switch contacts.

Thanks Guys i will check these. I did change the SOV a couple years agos due to leakage. The K40 relay sounds more probable.
