1985 190D
Anyone familiar with this diesel - 2.2 litre engine? Is it reliable or one to avoid? thanks in advance.

Isn't this the one with the earliest version of the 60x engine, the 601? Normally aspirated 4-banger? Not sure if this was the engine that had the single-row timing chain. Should be OK, these 201s had a lot of features later used in the W124 models.

A keeper.
My experience - pretty much bulletproof. A 190D 2.2 with a 5-speed tranny can readily achieve over 40mpg. I think of it as the more modern equivalent of the 240D.
You won't win many drag races, but the pure simplicity of the drivetrain is enjoyable. 190's in general are prone to the same kinds of problems that plague other MB's. Climate control issues and power window problems are fairly common. Windows are easy to fix. Climate control issues are not usually so easy. SteveM.
