Parking brake help for 1983 300d

I am in the middle of replacing the parking brake shoes on my 1983 300D. I started this project when I found my Right Rear tire to be dragging. I attempted to adjust the start, but, i could not get enough adjustment to stop it from dragging. Upon disassembly I noticed the pads where worn down and were separating. Now I have completed replacing the new Shoes, but cannot get the rotor back on. I have adjusted the star as close as it will go, but the pads still stick out to far for the rotor ro fit back on.

What am I missing?

Thank you

The shoes need to be "exactly centered" on the backing plate or you will have difficulty getting the rotors back on.

Did you disassemble and lube the star adjuster? Also check to see that it is really compressed all the way.

Pads wont center

The pads, will not center below the flange. I have the star adjuster all the way in also. I have ensured the parking brake is released, and now I am beginning to wonder if the parking brake cable are bound up somewhere. I am off to find a long enough 7mm allan wrench to remove the parking brake cable bracket.

Did you loosen up the Parking Brake Cable.
On mine there is an adjustment for the whole Parking Brake Cable itself up near the Transmission.

I would recommend that you skip that step and loosen the cable instead at the adjustment mechanism. It's likely that someone previously adjusted the brakes by tightening the cable instead of adjusting the shoes.

Expander and cable

Well I got the bracket off and the expander seemed to have some issues. It took some work to get the parking brake cable off of the expander. It appeared to have been smashed a bit some how.

I had to pry the casing to make room for the cable to rotate out of the back. I then used a file to smooth out the rough edges and allow the expander to have full movement. I then loosened all the slack out of the parking brake cable and put it back together.

I ended up with the same problem. It seems that the expander will not contract enough to get the rotor back on over the shoes. I am still at a loss.

PN for expander

Does anyone have the PN for a new parking brake expander?

I keep coming back to that as my issue.

Part numbers

These are the part numbers for a new Shackle and pin for connecting the parking brake cable to the Shackle.

I am ordering these today from the local dealer and hope it is the solution to my problem.
