82 300sd newbie need help IP timing mark
Hi everyone, I recently purchase a 300sd 82'. Previous owner replaced IP and it haven't start since. Since I brought it home I sprayed some starting fluid it started. Now I suspecting the fuel delivery is not enough from the IP. Please help me with setting the timing at the IP. thank you. Please help.

Unlike Rotary Fuel Injection Pumps like are used on GM, Ford and VW type Diesel Engines there is no timing mark on the mounting flange of the Mercedes Fuel Injection Pumps.
Also changing the timing only changes when the fuel is delivered not how much fuel is delivered. Starting Fluid can damage your Engine so I would avoid using it again. Go down the list and find "Drip Timing Threads" Diesel Injection: Besides Drip Timing there are other methods of timing the Fuel Injection Pump but they involve buying some a special electrical setup. If you are having a fue starvation problem there is a filter screen at the bottom of the Fuel Tank and 2 Fuel Filters that can get plugged up. Also if your hand primer has a shiny Aluminum body on it; it is the old style and they are noted for allowing air to leak into the fuel system when they get old.

There are timing markings, but you have to remove the pump in order to see them. And it's possible that that is what you need to do.

You have apparently failed to consider the possibility that the IP was reinstalled without being properly indexed in the first place. In that case, which seems to be an outstanding possibility considering that the engine won't start, drip timing alone won't solve the problem.

I hope none of this scares of a new member as it is just normal banter here on the Forum.
The OP did not say how long it ran; he also did not say it the Engine died after he stopped spraying the starter fluid. He did say he felt it was not getting enough fuel. He did not say he thought he was getting no fuel at all. I hope he/she will give us some more details. I gave a general answer to the OPs general question.
