83 300d dead tack
So where do I start with this. This is a new one for me I've never seen a tachometer fail. I'm assuming since there is no ignition source (Distributor) the car uses a hall effect sensor on the front off the harmonic balancer or off the cam shaft. Do they fail? IF so is that typically the place to start? If not please give me some pointers as I know the AC will not work with a working source form the tack. Thanks

Yes, Hall effect from the front of the crank. The wire harness goes to an amp located on the drivers side inner fender. There is a tall plastic cover, unscrew it. Someone here makes a solid state replacement, try that, or buy a new one.

you can also search here for "cigarette butt repair" and try to wedge something under the board on your amp and give it a bit more life...

Or you can scrape off all the silicone on the inside of the amp and re-solder as many connections as you can, worked for me. Most people with tach problems have a bad tach amp, that is your best place to start.

On mine is was a deteriorated wire connection to the sensor at the front crank pulley....replacing the sensor/cable (for $60+ ) solved the issue.

I'll dig around and see what I can find. Thanks for the tips. If it needs new wires I'll make my own for $60.00
