1973 220d IP fluid type? I have heard use the same as engine oil 10w 30 and i have heard 30 weight oil. What one is correct? My manual does not say.

Im hoping you don't use 10W-30 in your engine!!!!!

Use a diesel rated engine oil in both the engine and IP. Personally I like Mobil Delvac 15W-40.

I havent done any fluid changes yet. I just got the 220d. In the manual 10w 30 is one that is listed on the chart. But I asked here first!!!

Good, just don't want you to harm your engine. Like I said I would recomend using Mobil Delvac 15W-40 in both, I think walmart sells it for 10 bucks a gallon.

A bit of history explains this:

In the 1970s there was 10W30 API CD oil, which was 10W30 HD oil made exclusively for diesels. Stae of the art at that time.

API-SD was made for gassers. I used to buy it for 10.50/24 cans, lol.


Any of the modern oils for diesels will far exceed the requirements satsified by the oils in the 1970s.

It never hurts to flush the old oil out by just pumping it in vigorously with a hand pump and letting the excess dribble out. Every once in a while, if there is some sediment on the bottom, it will come out.

These IPs and engines (OM615) are very stout, and usually don't survive ONLY because of cheap oil and bad treatment.

I have found one that was neglected, i.e. not used, vs being badly treated and the engine is so strong I can start it at 50 degrees w/o the glow plugs operating. I know this because the ground wire leading to the GPs was missing when I got it! lol
