How I got 34.2mpg

Drove from Atlanta GA to St George Island FL in MONSOON weather. I must have been doing 45-50mph. I thought my ODO must surely be off but my new GPS confirmed it. I got 472 miles on 1 tank!

So maybe all those ebay claims are not false. Maybe everyone drives through hurricane weather every day?

I got that mileage in my SD a few weeks ago doing several 70 mile trips at around 45-50 mph.....I held constant throttle rather than constant speed. My MPG was about 33.7 or so.....over the course of just over 300 miles.

I've gotten over 30 as well, just by driving carefully. Adding diesel kleen cetane booster helps a lot to get close or over 30 consistently too...although that would be considered "cheating" by strict standards. Cost of mileage difference usually makes up for the price of the additive though.

Winmutt,
I assume this is in the '85? Are you running the factory 2.88 diff? What is your engine rpm at 50mph? It sounds like whatever the rpm range you were operating in is optimal, plus you probably had the added advantage of cooler, denser air from the storms you were driving through.

I am starting to creep up to the 30's after changing out my rear tire and when the climate started to cool off, last time i only got 22-25 mpg. the previous tire was on at least more than 5 years and its stale, bald and looses lots of air.

Yes the 85 with 2.88 diff. Tach has been dead since I forgot to swap the sensor over when I swapped engines. Most of the time I was just coasting as it was pretty much a continuous hydroplane. Maybe hydroplaning decreases friction?

I suspect I was driving in that same storm (Sarasota -> Atlanta) and got my best mileage to date in the 84 300D (32+ MPG). Something magical in the air, perhaps.

Best I ever got was 41 mpg over about a 70 mile trip. Back roads, averaged about 50mph. '95 w124.
