Crankcase ventililation oil return line

Alright, so I'm on the very final stage of putting in the new engine into my car. I ran into a problem that I do not have the experience to resolve. I'm a little confused on this issue so I am looking for advice on the best way to proceed.

My old engine had a rubber piece that went from the top of the crankcase to the air filter. At the bottom of the air filter there was a metal tube that went down into the oil pan. I had two pipes going into the oil pan, one for the turbo and one for the air filter housing.

My new engine only has the one tube for the turbo line. No return hose for the filter housing. I have the housing that supposedly was on the new engine, it has a smaller hole for the oil return, but I have no idea where this is supposed to go.

My question is what should I do about this? Can I bypass this somehow? Can I put a return line somewhere else?

Oh, sorry. This is an '82 300SD. The engine came out of a '79 300SD

On the bottom of the air cleaner housing, on mine, is a metal line from the lower end of the oil separator, is this not on the 79?
The only rubber line I have is the breather hose from the cam cover to the top of the air filter housing.
Pics would help.
These are from an 82 300D.

Yes, that is exactly what mine looks like. The problem I have is that on the new engine, I don't have a place to put that metal line that comes out of the oil separator. That metal line is supposed to go down into the oil pan, correct?

The housing from the 79 is a little different, but the problem is the same...there is no place on the oil pan to put a house for the oil return.

Can you swap out oil pans?

You have a choice: swap the upper oil pan for one that has two drain hoses or install a catch bottle and drain it from time to time. The first choice may also require a different lower oil pan (I've never done the swap myself).

Yeah, I considered swapping oil pans. However, during the day that I had to remove the old oil pan to remove the camshaft so I could turn the torque converter to remove it and put it on my new engine (old engine froze up due to a loss of oil related to a cracked lower oil pan), it might have been 110* in my garage and a few of the bolts were stripped...and I may have been very short on patience while having in my possession a drill with some cobalt drill bits and a sledgehammer.

Needless to say, the old oil pan is in several pieces. I think I'm going with the bottle method.

Thanks for the suggestion.

some of the older diesels had the line from the valve cover going into the U-Tube. then the engine just burned the oil vapors.

Here is a 79TD that had the vent line going to the U-Tube.
