Any tricks/tips for removing injectors from OM 606?

I am going to remove the injectors this weekend and have a local shop rebuild them for me. Is there anything tricky about removing these injectors? This is the non-turbo version of OM 606.

I have read of no problems with the actual removal of the Injectors themselves. But, I do not know what you need to do to get at the Injectors.
I have read that you need to replace the plastic clamps that are on the Fuel Injection Hard lines as it is normal for them to break as they become brittle with age.

I did mine and it was really easy - no worse than a spark plug. I bought the 22mm socket from Harbor Freight.

Don't forget new heat shields.

Was the socket a regular 22mm deep?

NO; you want the Baum 22mm 606 injector socket. Here: http://www.who-sells-it.com/cy/baum-tools-2681/mercedes-catalog-12889/page-19-fullsize.html

The reason is that the little fuel return nipples on the top of the injector may not fit into a standard 22mm deep socket. And you don't want to break them off or the injector becomes trash.

There's usually a few in the tools for loan section.

I bought this one:

You dont want to nick the return line barbs or bend one; will cause difficulty sealing afterwards. From memory the factory socket is ~4.25-4.5" long and does have the cutout as pictured to clear the barbs.

You'll prob want new return line too unless yours is pretty new.

To what torque should the injectors be put back in at?

Diesel911 04-07-2014 12:25 AM

On the 617s if you have a 12 Point socket that is deep enough you won't damage the Barbs.

I am guessing if you have an extra long 22mm that is a 12 point you also will not damage the Hose Barbs.

Since the Sockets won't have to withstand more than 60 Foot Pounds of torque strength wise you do not need an expensive socket.

Injectors = 40Nm (29ft.lbs)
Injector lines = 10-20Nm (7.5-14.75ft.lbs)

Just as a matter of interest, if you wouldn't mind can you report back whether you have Lucas or Bosch injectors.

Well that was an old thread that I revived. Not sure I have an injector problem quite yet, still reading thru old threads and listening to sage advice before I make my next move.

I did find an old thread where someone detailed when an injector is suspect, to loosen the fuel line from it while the car is idling and see if the sound goes away.

Also found that in general, people have had good luck with the rebuilt Bosch units available at another popular parts site.
