nylon screen on top of oil filter?

1973 220d. The last owner did not put the nylon screen back on top of the oil filter.(paper) Is this harmful to the engine? Should I order a new one or can I go one oil change without it. I do not want to damage the engine!!

Your oil is not being filtered without it.

Order 2 of them. That way you can swap it during an oil change and clean it at your leisure,

If the screen is missing, better make sure the spring is not missing also.

there is a spring with a washer that the filter was pressed on top of. Is there two springs or just the one with the washer.

There is just one spring. The whole thing will be pretty tight when you go to put the filter cannister in place.

Boy, I loved that old Benz, but I sure don't miss changing the oil filter.
