My Evaporator cleaning and blower motor R&R experience
 

Hi all,

As always, the forum has provided a wealth of information to help me get started on this project. Not to mention, Gsxr's hosting of the tech pages has been a great help.

On that note, here's the fsm reference #s I used:

83-140 Removing grill/plastic trim
82-0680 Removing and installing wiper motor
83-556 Removal and installation of blower motor

The blower motor was actually easy to take out once you figured out how to get off that metal clip. At first, I tried to lift it out. Nope, that didn't work. So I took an awl, pushed it and the clip slightly downwards and towards the rear of the car and it easily came off.

Attached below is a pic of my evaporator. Oddly, the right side had way more junk in the fins than the left side. What would be the reason for that? Unfortunately for me, I purchased some non-toxic, foaming evaporator cleaner which didnt arrive in time for this Labor Day weekend project. So in the meantime, I took an old cut down toothbrush to knock off some of the crud. I did manage to get a significant amount of it out.

Now, not knowing much about motors, I inspected my 87 motor and it seems fine. It never seized, but it does not spin as freely as I imagined. Should this thing spin easily? Regardless, I had my local junkyard pull another blower motor out of a 95 E300D ($30) which will be the one I will use. As mentioned, I don't know much about motors like this. Where do you lube it? I read some posts that the blue/black and white can of 3 in 1 oil is the one to use, but where's the lube points? See two pics.

What else can be done to make sure the blower motor is properly lubed and restored?

that sounds a little more reasonable

alrighty, while the weather has cooled down somewhat, but i can say for certainty that the amount of airflow has increased big time. as mentioned and shown above, about 75% of the left side of the evaporator was clogged with crap. my harshest critic at work was impressed by what she felt coming out of the AC vents. I am too.

anyone who is interested in improving their AC performance needs to do this.

Did you use the '95 blower Bob (looking for a spare late 124 blower)?

Yes, I'm using the 95 blower. Same exact everything as the 87 I pulled out. I checked the 87 and it works just as good, but I feel better with having the 95 in
