Before replacing the regulator, simply use a DC voltmeter across the battery with the engine running. If the regulator is working well, you should see something between about 13.4 and 14.0 Volts. If it is holding steady in this voltage range while the engine is running, then the chance of the voltage regulator being bad is remote at best.

I did notice that the AC would stop working if the battery drained down too much. Low voltage will cause lots of strange behavior.
Low voltage is how I would describe myself at the moment, but the little guy I am holding beside me sure is sweet even when cutting teeth. He has been far easier to deal with his brother or even him mother.

Well Larry that was the first thing I thought about doing, but then I realized if it had a bad alternator the result would be the same so I didn't bother. Am I right, or is there something else that I am not understanding here?

It seems I can't have the alternator tested at the parts store w/o removing the thing and the easiest thing to do seems to be to replace the voltage regulator.

For those that have done this Voltage regulator replacement on the garage floor or drive way. How had is it to get at to change. I have large floor jack and jack stands along with ramps. Is this something I do with it driven up on ramps? Or do I need it on jack stands for some reason. From what I can see topside the VR is on the bottom side or rear of the alternator.

And what amount of time do you think it will take me to do this. Weather here this week sucks with humidity 90% to 100% all the time and temps in 85* to 90* range. Will not start job until next week with weather change that is forecast for cooler and less humid weather.

If it is anything like the om617, lifting up a few inches on jack stands will be enough. VR was just held on by a couple of screws.

I sure hope so, I did one on my old 240D several years ago. Best I remember it was a 30 minute job of jacking the car up and down and 2 or 3 minutes for the regulator.

Just installed the A/C bus/fuse the other day, took 30 minutes. I dropped the screw and look for 20 minutes before I gave up and went inside to get the automatic screw finder (wife) and she walked into garage and stopped at the front of the car and pointed to the floor and said is that it. My answer was sure nuff honey.

The other 10 minutes was used to screw in the last screw and put up screwdriver and turn out the lights.

With my luck MB will have put some sort of protector cover over the thing that will drive me nuts getting it to come off.

Allow 30 seconds for disconnecting and reconnecting the battery.

Oldnavy, I sure wish I was in a positive cash flow position right now.....that is exactly what I wanted for my wife so my daughter could take over 300D....

Oh well...I'll just have to keep waiting for a better cash position.

Who knows maybe it will work out for you. If wife goes back to work in Novenber she will need the car til spring at least, before replacing with something else.

Got the car on jacks and discovered it had a dust cover to remove from back of the alternator and got that loose and off just as I got sick and almost threw up. That was Wednesday and I am about over what ever hit me and made me hang so much in the throne room. Maybe I can finish the job Sunday or Monday, I am getting nervous about the wife driving my car.

Crapola after an hour I got the screws out of the regulator and I can not get the darn thing to pop out, I can not get a good enough hold on the thing to get it out and now at the point of thinking am I going to have to pull the alternator out to make the swap.

Man what a PIA this has been, and I can only work out there for about an hour before loosing so much fluid in sweat that I get queasy from the effort. It is 80*F and 95% to 100% humidity range. Man to just be 50 again seems strange to be saying, but I was still able to do this kind of thing till about 55 or so when I really noticed how hard it was to work in the heat and on car in general.

Oh well as a friend said at least I am retired and have plenty of time to do the work. In other words I can turn a 1 hr job into a 2 or 3 week job with no big deal or problem.
