What happend to this Turbo?..... pics

I am looking at a motor that was pulled from a running 300sd.
The owner was rear ended lightly and the car was totaled out by the ins company.

I'm a 240d guy looking to pick up this motor bit concerned with the turbo ( see pics)
Any idea what might have casue the damage?
what kind of damage to the diesel motor if parts of the vanes flew off this?
Pretty sure the car rear end wreck was not part of the turbo problem.

The motor is low miles and was always serviced and is low price. Just have to go get it.

All opinions appreciated.

Looks like some object was sucked into the turbo.

does the wheel move around the housing? if so the bushings are beat and could have oiled up the intake.

if the blades broke up usually w/ pieces that small they will not cause any sort of internal damage. if they entire wheel was broke or snapped in half it would bd a different story.

I'd be more concerned about what hit the Turbo to do that kind of damage, because chances are it got blown into the engine also There are bent and broken compressor blades, so it was obviously pretty solid and if all those metal pieces went through the intake into the engine I would say there has to be internal damage.

Older post reported air cleaner parts falling into turbo

Rattling air cleaner case will cause your turbo blades to be filed off

i've seen some pretty amazing turbo explosions that didn't cause any internal engine damage. and i'm talking spilt comp wheel explosions.

Wheel turns great and smooth... the impeller is tight as new...
I will never know what took the vanes out but the material looks to be softer metal so maybe I'm ok... I will be doing a comp test soon.
I have a spare tight turbo for replacement.

My turbo blades are a little dinged and bent near the edges of the hole...not quite that bad though. But it still builds boost pretty well and the engine runs great.

Could this be the source of the oil in my intake?

I have a W124 300D and I have noticed some significant oil buildup in my intake.

I have also noticed oil seeping out around the shaft that used to hold the flap in my intake just aft of the turbo.

If so, should I get a new turbo or can the existing one be rebuilt?
