I need to make sure I have these engine ID's straight

If you'd be so kind to confirm my research so I won't have to send my car over to puke black death into anyone's driveway...

In the W123 chassis, you can find an OM617.951 or OM617.952, yes?
The OM617.951 would be in a 300SD turbo from '81-'85.
The OM617.952 would be in a 300D, 300CD, or 300TD turbo from '82-'85.

But drivetrain parts for a TD (ie, wagon) aren't always exactly the same as the sedan or coupe. Right? I think I've read where the rear ends are different. Maybe it's in the gearing?

How about from coupe to sedan? Are the drive trains between those two any different?

FWIW, this is research for a complete drivetrain swap into a '77 240D.

AFAIK, the 617.952 was only used in the 123's and the 617.951 was only used in the 126's.

Are you asking what engines came in which chassis, or which engines fit in which chassis? The latter opens up a few more possiblities.

Info from the 617.95 FSM, page 00; agrees with you:

300 SD 1978-1980 116.120 617.950
300 SD 1981-1985 126.120 617.951
300 TD 1981-1985 123.193 617.952
300 D 1982-1985 123.133 617.952
300 CD 1982-1985 123.153 617.952

Regarding the other questions, EPC net can let you research options based on the model type. If you want to know if a specific drivetrain part came on a specific model, it can match that up for you. I don't think it can say if a different part will fit, though.

If you are wanting to do a complete drivetrain swap, I think the '85 300d drivetrain would be ideal, you would get the turbo engine, simplified vacuum controls, 2600 rpm torque converter, 2:88 rear diff. all in one package. Combined with the 240's manual climate controls, you would have a really nice (and simple) car. Keep in mind you will have to transfer the firewall bracket for the newer style accelerator linkage, and the bracket for the coolant tank. Overall, though should be very straight-forward swap.

Skippy, I'm confirming which engines came in which chassis and then how the cars were labeled which had those engines (300 SD, 300 CD, etc). It would make hunting for a donor car much easier because I doubt most of the owners know exactly what motor they have. The 617.951 and .952, from my research, came with around 123 hp. I'd rather swap that motor in if I can confirm they were in the w123 chassis and what car.
I will if I have to, but I'd rather not have to use the welder to get some crazy setup to fit if I don't need to. Sometimes getting parts for a job like that turns into a nightmare and I'm into keeping life simple and sweet. lol

Kingdoc,
Thanks for that info! It's good to know. Yeah, I like simple cars. They run longer.
