83 SD primer pump issue....

ok i was just reading another thread where a guy was having hard start and dying issues. i'm in the same boat. for the past few days the car has been acting funny, idleing rough, having no power and a leaky fuel primer.

so i last night i cleaned the tank screen, put 2 new fuel filters on and proceeded to try and start the car back up as usual. the car started on the first try yet died a few seconds later. i figured it just ran out of fuel in the filter so i tried to start it again... but no luck.

so i crack the filter banjo and upon cranking the engine i have no fuel coming out of the bolt.

am i correct in thinking that with the plunger leaking for so long it wore out the lift pump and caused it to die. then once i let air back into the system the pump lost all suction and now nothing?

so if i grab a new electric pump from work and plumb that in i should be good no?

any help is appreciated.

kyle

Your first step should be to replace the leaking primer pump. Not all that expensive and you get an updated design that won't be leaking anytime soon.

well if i hook up an electrical pump i won't even need that primer anymore b/c the lift pump will self prime the system.

Never heard of a leaky primer pump causing the lift pump to fail. If it were me, I'd just rebuild or replace the lift pump. I like the fact that the 617 will run without electricity. If you add an electric pump, this will no longer be true.

The Electric Fuel Pumps that are in the $45 range do not put out enough pressure or Volume (to run the Engine at high speeds). They are at the most 7psi.
Next is that when your Engine is running it has to pull the Fuel through the Electic Pump which has much smaller diemeter openings in it.
Also the Fuel Supply Pump that is attached to the IP moves maybe 10 times the volume of Fuel that a little Electric pump can.

They do make Electric Fuel Pumps that will work but they are in the $150 or more range and some may not be compatiable with Diesel Fuel.

What was missing in you post after cleaning the Fuel Tank Screen is that I did not read that you used the Hand Primer to pump Fuel up to the Fuel Injection Pump.
There is a whole lot of Air that needs removing between the Fuel Tank and the Fuel Injection Pump when you remove the Fuel Tank Screen.

If you Cranked the Engine with Air in the system you most likely now have Air trapped between the Fuel Injection Pump and the Injectors in the Hard Lines.

Pump and Pump on you Hand Prime until you can hear a steaddy buzzing or squeaking sound from the IP Over Flow Valve.

After that loosen all the Hard Line Nuts up at the Injectors.
Crank the Engine (don't drain down the Battery too much or overheat your Starter) and when Fuel is comming out from undar all of the loose Hard Line Nuts; tighten them and see if your car will start.

thanks brotha.

well i work at a diesel performance shop and have performance lift pumps in stock that can push upwards of 60psi (not that i'm using that one) but i am going to use a carter pump reg'd at 15psi.

the plunger is actually pretty beat and will push fuel out of the seals when you try to prime it. before i took the car apart it had a pretty decent drip coming from it as well.

coming from a cummins i know all too well about bleeding injection lines lol. that's the reason i cracked the banjo at the filter head. i wanted to make sure i got fuel there first but maybe i just don't have the suction w/o pumping the plunger.

it's funny too cause my duramax has a primer plunger and it leaked and got air in the system. so i put a fuel air seperation system on the truck and eliminated the stock filter housing and plunger and haven't had a problem since. so i figured it'll work on this as well. as you don't need a plunger if you have a pump to self bleed the system.

How much to the Electric Fuel Pumps Cost (without the employee discount)?

well the carter pump that i'm using we sell for $250. but, it's a whole kit for a dodge that comes with lines and all.

i can get just an adjustable diesel pump for $250 that will push from 5 psi to 50 psi. then up from there is a Raptor pump for $389 that will push from 5psi to 70psi, then up again is an airdog that will seperate Air/Water from the fuel, giving you better fuel mileage and powe (only thing on the market like it) i'm trying to get them to give me one for the benz

i have a 150gph 10psi pump on my duramax and a 150gph 25psi pump on my cummins.

here are some pics

What was the model pump you used and what pressure did you set the pump at?

How has the set-up worked for you since?

If the leak is bad enough, why wouldn't it? At least it would make it "fail" to pump fuel; it would just suck air instead.
