You need the A-B light.
Plug the the probe into the port and connect the battery lead. Have someone slowly rotate the engine until the "B" light comes on. Now rotate it very slowly until both lights come on. Read the damper. The spec is 15° ATDC +/- 1° Last edited by Brian Carlton; 09-11-2009 at 10:55 PM. |

My mistake. The IP timing is +/- 1° The timing chain stretch is allowed up to 4° at the crankshaft. I'll edit post #2. |

A different Engine but I tried to time mine a little advanced and it was nailining some; and as you are thinking of doing had to retard the timing. From the threads and posts I have read it seems the after 1985 Fuel Injection Pumps that use O-rings as part of their seal have more problems with Nailing than the 617 types. They also seem to have more duedads in their fuel supply system that become sources of air leaks that can cause nailing. Despite the self air bleeding in some of them.

What exactly did you do to set timing? How much did the IP move in the process of setting timing?
Long list of possibilities includes: Need to bleed the injector lines Clogged fuel filters Clogged fuel tank vent Exhaust system restriction Disconnected or non-functioning idle control Sixto 87 300D |

When it was running lound and nailing did it run for more than 3 seconds? You were going to retard the timing. Did the Engine start runing for 3 second only after you retarded the timing? With the littl information it you are having a Fuel Supply Problem like an air leak or something else is cutting of the Fuel. I like to get a container with clean Diesel Fuel and run a longer Fuel Inlet hose to that as this bypasses anything to the rear that could cause a problem. I do not know much about the newer engines but I remembe seeing the one of them had the Primary filter in the same housing with the Spin On Filter. There was an O-ring and the filter itself seemed to have a rubber sealing area attached to it. Perhaps those have gone bad and are leaking air.
