Pentosynth TS 5W40.
 

Anybody else tried this? It's only a little more expensive (wholesale) than the Lubro Moly Touring High Tech Diesel 15w40 which I use in the '83, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Mercedes 229.1 approved (whatever that means!).

Dude, this is some slippery stuff! I only drive about 5000 mi. per year, so I'm just gonna' do a filter every six months, change the oil/filter together once/year.

I put the Pentosin in the same time I did the engine mounts, so I can't really say if the oil makes a huge difference, but this engine runs SMOOTH!

The '79 and '80 wagons get Napa Fleet 15w40.

If it's approved by MB, it must be good. Just know that just because it's a synthetic doesn't mean you can go with extended oil change intervals unless you know the soot content of the oil. You'll have to get it analyzed for that. 2-3% is the point which to change it.

I more concerned about pH. I don't put many miles on my cars.... Around town, I try to ride my bike.

I use pentosynth in everything I own including my 240D. I have been doing extended oil changes of 7-8k miles and have had no issues. I've been driving close to 40K miles this past year and have to say I did see a very slight increase in MPG's with pentosynth over rotella.

By collecting a sample and sending it somewhere.

It costs about $30-40. Which is roughly the cost of the oil that goes into the car. I did it for my wife's Avalon when I switched to synthetic and found I couldn't run very extended intervals so I went back to dino with 3k mile changes.

I haven't seen the worth-whileness for doing it on my SD since I could just change the oil for roughly the same price knowing that the oil will protect until the next oil change.

The point of the oil analysis is to help you establish an approprite oil change interval and to get some diagnostic info for you engine.

At least one Pentosin product has been listed on most of the more recent MB specs requried for the newer engine designs. Ought to be good stuff.

Did you find it at one of the big box auto parts stores?

New around here? Brand of fluids. Maybe more popular among the VW folks?

I get it from IMC, a parts wholesaler. Retail on a 5 liter jug is $95, or something ridiculous. About $40 w/s.

Like I said in another post, I'm obsessing on this one. I'll get bored with it eventually and probably just start running Napa 15w40. For now, though, the car seems pretty happy with this oil.

Eurpoeans have lots of higher quality oils we can't source easily in the US.

FYI.
This oil is a Part Synthetic or Blend. TEIL in German means : Part, proportion, piece, bit.

It was formulated for Diesel Pumpe Duse VW engines 2004 through 2008.. It has a high film strength ZDDP or Zinc additive to reduce scuffing....if I was informed correctly.

Latest batch here is 505.01. but believe they now produce a 506.00.

The stuff I get is a full synthetic and is ~34 bucks at my local auto parts store with my discount.

$34 a gallon? :eek: That is mighty steep. I can get almost 2 gallons of my synthetic oil for that much $$....
$34 a gallon + filter means a 617 oil change would run about $80!
