I liked the idea of filing down the edges personally, but theres some definate liability there. My wife is a school teacher, and I'm sure the star wont make it three months in a high school parking lot

I took it off before some little bastard does.

I won't drive one far without it if I've got a choice... it just looks too... obviously missing. Like a queen without a crown. Mine has survived 3 years in a high school lot and 2-and-counting in a college lot and so far hasn't been yanked off. I have had to straighten it a few times; people love folding them over sideways just to mess with them. I've pulled off a road once to align it better because it was bothering me so much having it twisted off center. The centering springs or however it does it don't always get it exactly right, just sort of closer-than-not-having-them.

As a youth I enjoyed turning hood ornaments to the side. It was harmless mischief since none ever broke off and the ornaments could always be returned to their proper position.

The pneumatic star is somewhat ingenious but it would require cutting into the grille shell. Kind of looks cheesy, but not as bad as those DIY sunroofs for example.
