How the H*** do you get this Vacuum pump back on???

Ok so I took off the vacuum pump for rebuild. Removed the PS Belt and Radiator hose to do it. NOw I am trying to put that sucker back in but the spring is so tight I can't even get close to threading any of the bolts!!!

Tricks or advice please!

Hills and Valleys!!

The reason you can't get the vac pump into place is its roller, which rides on the eccentric cam of the injection pump timing device. The cam is a circular "track" with hills and valleys, you have a hill under the roller in the position you are in now! Grab a ratchet or breaker bar and your trusty 27 mm socket, put the socket on the crankshaft bolt and turn the engine enough to move the cam about 90 degree's to position it so that there is a valley for the roller to fit in! That way you should be able to get the vac pump in position and get the bolts started. get them all started and tighten them up in a cross pattern and you should be good with it! Good Luck

Thanks guys! I did what you said and it went on much easier! That bottom bolt is a real stinker though isn't it? Took a lot of trial, but finally got it done!

Thanks again!

I ran into this issue recently on my 240D. I just bumped the starter to rotate the engine.
