240D engine swap ?

I have a US model 240D with a bad cylinder & found a "good" replacement engine for it on craigslist. When I got the engine I first noticed that the AC compressor is differnent & in the wrong location...upon further inspection, I found that nearly everything on the outside of the motor looks different, including the oil filter & various other things. The seller claims that it is a "Grey market" version and that the only changes required were the intake and exhaust manifolds which I would have to swap out.

This looks like there may be a lot more to it than that :-( Any insight or recommendations on this would be most appreciated. The number stamped on the side of the engine block (from what I can see) is "5244 240D 440766"...is there a good way to decipher this ? Should I simply sent this engine back ?

I am curious if I should be able to mate up & bolt on the AC compressor, hoses, etc. that I have or ?

Thanks in advance for any advice on this !!

Brian

The big clue would be the oil filter housing, if its down under the car and not where you can reach it from above, driver side, its not from a W123, 240D, which is what yours is. If both are 123 engines everything should be swapable, euro or not. Also the AC compressor on your car would be down below and the one on the donner engine must be a York which mounts above, that could be a pain. I believe the manifolds of euros a US cars are the same so thats another red flag. It sounds to me like you have an engine from a 115 240D, which would be a problem. Where is the oli filter housing, that should tell the story.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply...yes the oil filter housing is on the lower front drivers side, which is where the AC needs to go...I have contacted the folks who sold me the engine & they are going to swap it out for a W123.

One thing you might consider when you get your 123 engine is changing that oil filter housing to block gasket, it is a usual leak spot and a bugger to change with the engine in the car.
