1980 300DT...
The 1980 300DT (wagon) - the ad says that it needs a solenoid to start - maybe it needs a lot more too, but how difficult is it to replace solenoid/starter combo on that car? Could it be something else? Is it possible to short cirucuit it somehow to try to get it to start?!

It can be a pain, to replace the starter, you need to go in from underneath, but it can be done, don't let that keep you from an otherwise a nice car.
The 80's have the old style glow plugs, I think, and the dreaded HVAC system, yet that notwithstanding, a fine ride.

Well, if you can rotate the engine by hand, that should give you an indication of it's health. Otherwise, you may be able to push start it, not an easy thing. If the seller is willing to have a new starter installed, just to prove the thing starts, tell him to add that to the asking price. Honestly, how can you possibly expect to sell a vehicle otherwise?
You can bypass the neutral start switch by jumping two of the screws located under a black box just in front of the battery. The problem with that is, if the starter is bad, it still won't start, but will try. So you need to find out just why it won't start, there are a few things to check, glow plugs are another.

Worth getting it running?!
I checked with the owner - he has no idea about car's maintenance history, or previous owners... a bit strange. The car has 212K on it and was 1 year since it was running last time. He claims that it never stopped running - it stopped starting...
Wondering if it's worth the hassle - with the car not running I'm buying a cat in the bag... but getting this beast started would require work BEFORE i even purchase it... hmmm.

The starter should not be so bad, as the '80 model w123's were non turbo.
How is the battery? Is there a terminal block on the right front fender? If so you can use two screwdrivers or a pair of pliers to jumper the coneections. This will allow the starter to engage and spin, if the starter is good.
