Can I join the cheap wagon club? pretty please!

ok, so I need another car, like I need a hole in the head...

but while surfing the local CL, i stumbled on an '87 300TD

its got high mileage compared to the rest of my fleet, and some cancer that even the 4 ad photos show...
but my Subaru is having some issues, and this OM603 with 321k is apparently running strong... I'm going to take a look tomorrow afternoon...

the lighting in the photo, on top of white balance is all shades of effed up!
CL ad...

if the rust seems localized, and non structurally invasive... I'm going to make an offer that shall qualify me for the CWC....

any input?

Look extra carefully for the extent of the rust ... from the looks of that photo, it's got bad rust on that passenger side fender (either that or a brown stain on the photo) ... if the rest of the car looks like that, you're probably looking at a pretty serious mess. However, 124 diesel wagons are really rare, and seem to hold their value pretty well. If you can get one for under $1,000 that runs well and has a mostly solid body, you've got a pretty nice deal.

Let us know what you find out!

I had about an hour long phone call with the guy this morning, he's up on diesel lingo, and seems to know the ins and outs of this car

Offer him $750 (assuming the rust is limited to panels and not structural) and jump on in!

Both my dashes are black, so I speak only from hearing the woes of other. Considering my 240D's overall condition, the fine condition of its black dash is nearly miraculous.

As a member of the CWC I'm not liking the idea of a W124 in the club.

Why? They're even rarer than the 123 wagon ...

We already allowed a W124, and it was a gasser 4-matic. Shame on us.

It would be the first W124 diesel wagon. I have no room to talk, but I wouldn't buy a car just to join a club.

HOW can we be sure? Shall we record this day in "forum history"?

Based on my review and understanding of the CWC charter there is no upper tier membership class in the CWC - once you're in, you're all the way in - so I really don't see "us" as speaking for everyone currently a member. There is no shame on my part.

The only shame I do see comes in disclosing you did not write the group's membership requirements the way you might have wanted them to be, and then in continuing to express regret for consequences of that rather than just accepting and enjoying it for what it really is.

There is some serious CWC over-thinking going on!

You almost can't pass up a running diesel W124 wagon for even the asking price, much less CWC status. But this will always be a beater, so if it's purchased with that knowledge then all the better.
I could work out of a mutt like that with no worries. Heck, if I can work out of Smash I can darn near work out of anything.......
(actually he is a rock solid citizen, just a "tad" on the homely side. Would be on another level with a CWC cheap paint job......)
