I tried my best to get that smaller race out, but couldn't. The large race came out just fine, but on the small race there isn't much metal to hit.

That's why I use a brass drift. Won't hurt if it slips.

Go to your local place where they sell used tools or individual sockets. If the hub is the same size as the w116s, w123s or w126s, you can purchase a socket that has a 42mm outer diameter to knock it out. Or bring your hub in there to pick out the right size socket. Once you get the correct size it is very easy to knock it out.

Why screw around? Pay somebody with a press $20 to remove it for ya'.

I agree r.e. the brass drift for INSTALLATION. For removal, you'll be there all day using brass. The old races are garbage anyway, so who cares if you slip? Beat the sucker out of there with the hardest, cleanest-edged STEEL drift in your box.
