wiper question 220d

The manual I have does not cover the 220d, only the 240d. Are the wipers on the 220d electric? They are so quiet that I suspect vacuum operation. They did stop working today, so now they are dangerously quiet!! If electric, I would look at the relay first, but where is the relay?

Update: The relay was bad. Capacitor wires broken and the switch gear is bad. Will need to replace it.

1973 220d.

My son is getting frustrated with the car because it constantly needs maintenance. When he looked at it I warned him of the age, manufacturer, and fuel type...it is not a Japanese, no-fuss, 3 year old car. The thing will require constant upkeep, just the way it is. Looks like mom is on his side and he will be trading his 220d for my 89 Volvo. Hate the thought of a winter without the Volvo, but at least the Mercedes has style!

The wiper relay is bad. Tried to fix it, but to no avail. Will order a new one soon.

This car is a riot to drive. Kind of like a motorcycle. All you hear when running down the road is the engine and road noise. I love it!

My 74 240D wipers are inoperative as well. It keeps blowing the fuse. Mine is getting jammed in the linkages. The motor is fine and the relay is fine. I disconnected the linkage from motor, now I only drive it when there is no rain.

If it's an automatic, couldn't you just keep using the foot pedal for it? (I've always thought this feature one of the coolest on the 220D.) A great work out while u drive!

I would agree, that foot operated washer/wiper mode was the niftiest intermittent wiper design ever!!! Sure miss it on the 123, especially since intermittent mode is currently out altogether.....
