Trans from a 72 240D int a 83 300cd turbo?

Will the trans from a 1972 240D work as a replacement for the trans in my 83 300CD turbo? The trans is slipping in 1st gear now, just started last week. It would be great if I could just replace it with the one from the 72 240D.

I don't think they are interchangeable but I'm not sure.

I have a good auto trans with 116k miles from my 300DT. Has the superior shift kit installed.

No, it's a totally different transmission.

Thanks for the replies, Is there a way then, to set up the current trans on 300CD Turbo so it won't shift down into 1st, just down to 2nd. All the remaining gears work in the trans, it's just that I have to rev the engine to 2k rpm to get the car to start moving, then feather the throttle until the trans shifts to second, then she moves just fine.

I did not think they made a 240D in 1972
1974 was the first year for the 240D

look up B2 piston repair.
classic symptoms of a b2 piston leaking.
I just did mine, and it is not bad a job in a 126... on the 123, it's a bit tighter a job, but it's doable.
CLEAN the underside of the car first.
Phil has all the parts, give him a call from the "buy parts" link above.
you might wanna call roy at the same link, and talk to him first... ofcourse he's gonna want you to pull the tranny and put it on a table to do the job.
