83 300D axel clips inside rearend
help. what is the trick to getting them back in ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ive been screwing around for over an hour and can only get one in, the other one is being a nasty bast***. brian ? ? ? ?

Maybe you have too many axle spacers on the CV joint, so the groove won't come in far enough. Check the CV joint surface for thin spacers.

Hope you didn't bend the clip and the axle has to be in a little further. get a block of wood on the end of that axle shaft and a good sized hammer and you will make enough room.

It would be better to know if you are putting the same exact Axle back into the same spot; or, if your are swapping or installing brand new Axles.
They have different sized spacers to adjust for the problem you are haveing. In the FSM the clip should go in OK and aftewards there should be no end play of the Axle. If you bought New Axles made overseas some members have had trouble with spacing them and also there is a machined radius on the Axles that sometimes does not allow the spacers to seat properly agains the Axle Face.

hold the hump of the clip with needlenose pliers and tap on the end with the palm of your hand to knock it in place.

I just went through this on an '82 240D, during my first experience installing a set of rebuilt axles.
After stuggling for about an hour with assorted blunt tools to try and install those clips, I wound up using a 1/4" socket-driver handle (looks like a screwdriver) with a 1/4" drive extension, tipped by 6 or 7mm socket to stay put on those little nubs and push the clips home. Happy Motoring, Mark

The shaft to flange angle on my replacements were slightly, very slightly, angled, and this prevented seating of the clips using the original spacers. I ground a slight bevel to the clips until they popped into the groove. Took a couple tries. I think this is a problem with aftermarket axles that are shaped slightly differently. Otherwise all went well.

i'd guess MB has a special tool just for the job too,. .. hope i never need to use it again but, i made iti from a welding needle scaler needle. tuff little bugger.
