New 300D Checklist and questions..

Hi all, new here to this particular forum.. Thought I'd stop by after an invite from a fella at vwdiesel.net... I personally don;t have a diesel Benz anymore but am the curiator of My niece's.. After the untimely demise of her 81 300SD (rearended a month before she went off to college) we found her a rather nice '83 300D which she is quite pleased with.. Before I hand the reins over to her I've been going over the car trying to take care of anything that could become a problem..

SO far I have have:
Adjusted valves, installed new v/c gasket, changed oil & filter (Using Shell Rotella)
Replaced glow plugs (Bosch Duratherms)
FLushed coolant, replaced all hoses and thermostat
flushed brake fluid, changed diff oil, changed trans fluid & filter
Replaced all the belts, rubber fuel lines & fuel filters, dumped some diesel purge in it
Replaced all the dash bulbs, bypassed rheostat for dash lights

Things to do yet:
Replace Oil Cooler lines
Make all necessary adjustment to the trans controls whatnot
Install CD Player (I dunno what was wrong with the working Becker cassette player)
Adapt the rigging I had in her 300SD for keyless entry
New Tires, possibly some winter treads
Undercoating is peeling in places, I want to cleand that up and re coat with chassis paint (Nasty stuff!).. PLan to do the same to the inside bottoms of the doors.
Lubricate the windows and sunroof...

ANything else to add to the list??? Now for my questions, one is that I don;t have the trunk key for this.. I debated about removing the trunk lock and re keying it to match the ignition key, but is it still possible to call the dealer and just get a new key??

THe other question is about the typical leaking oil pressure gauge.. I could just get a used one and call it happy, but I would feel better if there was something a bit mroe fail safe than another 26 year old gauge.. I am wondering if anyone has ever done any major dash cluster surgury and installed the electric workings from a 300SD gauge into one of these??

Thanks in advance for your input!

Sounds like you've just everything covered. I would check the voltage regulator too, maybe install a new one.
Replace the oil cooler lines only if leaking, I understand it can be quite an ordeal.
Lubricating the sun roof is a job also, but I need to do that as well. If the windows are slow, it could be a failing regulator, but have at it.
Go to your nearest dealer to get a new master key, bring proof of ownership.
Not sure about the oil gauge from an SD, I would think you'd need the sending unit too. The gauge itself is easy enough.

Good call on the voltage regulator!! I'm on the fence about the cooler lines.. They don;t look so pleasant to change.. They weren't bad on the SD.. But that car had a bit more room yunder the hood.. THey appear damp at the crimps, but that coudl have been from the v/c gasket leak too.. Guess I'll have to drive and see...

THe sunroof and all 4 windows are slow.. The car has been sitting since 2000, so I'm hoping some lube will smarten them up.. How nasty is that sunroof to lube???

I'm hoping the SD oil pressure sending unit fits in this one okay.. I need to check that out before I press forward with the cluster surgury... If that fits, and I can get the gauge in the cluster all I should have is just a few wires to route... If all else fails I was examining a parts cluster from my old 220D... Looks like the same darn workings..

FInally got a pic snapped of the ole girl.. Needs some serisous buffing.. I did a few spots on the hood and it improved alot.. I suspect that the front fenders and hood were repainted after an accident as they are not near as nice as the rest of the car.. I suspect when she is out of college a decent repaint will be in order.. At 161,000 miles she'll be driving this one for quite some time so It'll be worth it..

Nothin like sticking a 16 year old in a diesel Benz for her first car.. After we got the official word her 300SD was totaled she was adamant that she wanted another.. Corrupt them young I say!

There's no reason to convert to a w126 oil pressure gauge, if yours is leaking; replace it. If you don't want a used one; buy a new one.

There's plenty of reason aside from having a pile of gasser 126 clusters to hack up... No pressurized oil running to the passenger compartment!

It was a rather easy swap to boot...

Hard to tell from the pic, but it looks like clear coat is peeling away, no real fix to that.
Reading up on lubing the SR, you need to remove the inside cover, just yank on it while part way open, in front, or something. If you're going to go that far, clean out and re-lube the cable tube, removing the cable first.
Use special grease on the runners.

The PO said the clear coat was peeling too.. However I don;t think the paint on the front end is basecoat/clear coat.. Looks like a poorly sprayed and thin acrylic with 6 tons of wax on it... Some of the light spots buffed out okay, while the rest is either severely faded, or else that's primer showing though.. I'm going to have them assess it when it's at the body shop later this week.. There's a few chips that are quickley turning into surface rust.. I want those addressed before they get worse...

I think I'll save the sunroof lube for next weekend..
