240D Injector pump installation

I'm re-installing an injector pump in a 1975 240D and am not finding too much satisfaction with my Chilton's manual.
I have the marks aligned on the injector pump splined shaft (missing spline teeth) and the case (single reference mark). I have the engine setting at 45 degrees BTDC ready to install the pump, though the manual references some other marks aligned by removing some component on the pump and peering inside. This is my boggle. Some of the things I've read in this forum leave me thinking that setting the crank at 24 degrees BTDC is the correct setting So what is it, 45 or 24 degrees?
Also, I recall a good reference to a bubble method of timing the pump, but I'm not having any luck finding it. Could someone point me in the right direction to locate this thread?

Thanks,
Chuck Whitt

DRIP method.

Sorry, man, I don't have the FSM here at home. Somebody does, though. Nothing in the DIY threads? Seriously, did you try a search. I'm sure that info is on here, somewhere.

Try "IP timing", or "IP install".

Jay.

My manual only goes back to 1977

615.912/94 24 degrees BTDC

615.913/940 26 degrees BTDC

616.617 24 degrees BTDC

I did not see anything with 45 degrees.

My Chilton manual has 74-81 240d as 24 BTDC

I would be surprised if it were 45 degrees, when you find out for sure, be sure to install the pump on the COMPRESSION stroke, dont just turn the engine from TDC to 24 (or what ever) and stick in the pump, make sure your on the compression stroke or it will run really bad if at all. Dont ask how I know

[QUOTE=82-300TD;2298200]That method is inaccurate and should be avoided entirely.

Have you ever tried it? As a matter of fact, its more accurate than it needs to be.

[QUOTE=82-300TD;2298207]Yes I have. Timing accuracy with the bubble "method" is all over the place, it can be off as much as 3* (verified with the drip tool).

if you were 3 degrees off using the bubble method I would suspect "operator error"

I don't have the Chilton's manual handy now, but it clearly says 45 degrees. I'll post the exact quote when I get back home (and install the pump at 24 degrees BTDC). I'll let you know how it works when done.

I do have a drip tube, and absent the debate I've started, that's the only way I've known how to time the pump. Unfortunately, the one and only time I did it, I had a broken pump (literally, a broken casing). I thought I might want to try the bubble method this time, but tried and true is good too.

Thanks,
Chuck

I am wondering if the Crankshaft Damper even has 45 degrees before top dead center on it.
This is from 2-4 of my Cilton Manual I hope it will blow up enouh to read the text.

It should be set to 24.

The drip method is dead on accurate if you pay any attention at all to what you are doing.

NOW, BE WARNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any time you start a diesel after serious injection pump service such as a pump change, ALWAYS have a 17MM open end wrench IN YOUR HAND!!!!!!!!! If the engine runs away upon start up or after blipping the throttle IMMEDIATELY loosen each injector line in turn at the injector. A half turn will be enough and the fuel will only dribble down the injector. Loosen them all until the engine dies.

BTDT!
