Jump 83 300sd starter

Can any one tell me which wires to jump in the block under the hood to crank an 83 300sd. There are two large one and two small ones. My starter suddenly won't crank. Seems to have juice. Maybe neutral safety switch.

Thanks

I think it's 1 and 3 from the front, but you won't hurt anything by jumping ones that don't work, momentarily.

On a 123 you apply the (+) voltage to the terminal on the Junction Block has a White and Purple wire attached together. White goes to the Solenoid and Purple goes to the Glow Plug Relay.
The bunch of wires to the left are on the (+) side of the terminal block.

The SD's have a four screw set up, seems 1 & 4 work.

Have you tried starting it in neutral? Even if the NSS is out it should start in neutral.

I tried several things. Jumping from the large wires to the purple wire seems to be correct. I get a selenoid click sometimes and the glow plug relay click as well. I was able to get it to start once after banging on the starter a little. Looks like I need a starter. It is funny because I have never had an issue with it. In other vehicles there usually is a period of some problems before hand. Any way how tough is replacement? I have heard others complain about this job. I looked at it yesterday and it doesn't look too bad. I need to get a 10mm hex driver. Are there only 2 bolts on the back and a bracket to the block?

it's not too bad on the SD.
you better have some strong arms, or a good impact wrench and impact rated hex socket!
clean the bejezus out of the bolt heads before you try to loosen them, and try soaking some PB blaster or AeroKroil on the starter bolts a day in advance...
good luck!

The first time I changed the starter on the SD it took me about 1-2 TOTAL hours and I am far from an expert.

I would first check all the wiring to the starter to make sure nothing has come loose. This would cause the symptoms you are describing. A bad solenoid would as well.

This is what I have done on jobs were you worry about the Allen Head Bolts stripping take a good look at the end of your Allen Socket Tool.
If there is a lot of Radius on the end as in the first pic; grind it flat so that more of the tool makes contact with the edges; 2nd pic.

Thanks for the advice. I will clean the socket out before. I have used the remove radius trick from the allen drive before. I think I will put some heat to the starter as well as some penatrating oil. Will see how it goes tonight.

Happy to report I got the starter out in under 1 hr. No major issues. The lower bolt came out using a 3/8 ratchet and some brute strength. The upper came out with the same 3/8 ratchet and a 1ft pipe for torque. I noticed that the upper bolt had a small chisel mark on its face- most likely from the last time this was done. I was able to barely slip the starter out between the steering components by turning the wheel all the way to the right. Any way I will pick up the new one tommorrow and hopefully the installation is trouble free. Thanks for the help.
