77 300D heater

Ok, I have learned enough that I do not want this evil servo in my car. It does not work.

I have a parts car, 85 300sd. What is the possibility of actually putting that heater system in this 300d?
How hard would it be?

Very difficult in my opinion. Not worth the effort. Replacing with a rebuilt metal bodied servo or the computerized alternative would be a better choice.

As Kerry said, the computerized would solve the Servo problem. Hardwired is a co that has them. think Phill sells them. might be around $700.00.

The way I would go, is pull the Heat/ a/c unit out of a 240D, then you would have the Manual controls and it would be simple and less problematic.
I paid around $50 for ea one at PNP.

I think it is 280ezrider that did it to his 77 280CE. beautuful car.

I pulled a couple out of a 79 and a 83 240D, one is going in my 85 300D when ever it get moved further up the todo list.

wonder why MB used the servo in the 77 300D and the manual in the 240D through 83?

does the manual control use all cables, or is it still vacuum for the flap doors?
That is what I started to think of doing, then I thought, I have all of these parts from the 82.
So I will go back to the manual idea.
Thanks

Depends on what year 240D you pull the hvac system. If you pull it from an 77-80 240D it will be all vacuum pods. I pulled an hvac system from an 81 240D which had all cables except for the main air flap.
Of course you will have wire it in so it works right

^^I never knew that! I would have thought older version would be mechanical. I have a 79, so I guess I'm lucky everything works. Are the cable operated systems the most reliable of all?

Why did MB use the servo in the 300D?

My guess is that it was supposed too be more luxurious, to have ACC, so they put it in to distinguish the 300D as the more expensive model. In America, the w123s were at a similar price point to the most expensive Cadillac and Lincolns, which had had ACC standard for many years. Are 116s as bad?

I've lucked out, I guess. I've never had a problem with the Climate Control system in any of my Mercedes. Well, except the fact that the A/C compressor has never worked on my 240D. But the fan blows tons of air, and it puts out enough heat to warm a small Cathedral.

The vac on the system is working because I have multiple fan speeds. So I removed the siezed pump, no help, and then bypassed the servo to a manual control, and a pull cable. Not much heat. Do I need the pump in the loop to provide good heat?

thanks

Not quite, my 78 240D has manual cable operated flaps. If it has the big dials for each side of the car then it has a manual climate control and has cable operated flaps. Its only the automatice climate controls with the temperature wheel that have the vac operated flaps.

Sorry for the confusion. While I would like to upgrade this to the manual controls completely, I have not. I have left the evil servo, because the fan speeds, and flaps are working. I bypassed the servo, and installed a manual valve operated by a cable. and removed the pump.
I am thinking I need a new pump to help push the heated water. Will one from a W126 work?
