Anyone ever have a runaway diesel?
I was reading a recent post about diesel fuel leaking into the oil system on on member's car. A few posters warned about the danger of a runaway diesel engine.
I had this happen to me with a VW Rabbit with extreme blowby. The CV system managed to put enough oil back into the the intake that the engine would not stop when the key was turned off. Fortunately, it was a 4-speed manual. After using the emergency brake to slow the car and getting the car into second, I let out the clutch and stood and the brakes, and the engine stalled. This happened just north of Ithaca, NY with a state trooper behind me. Luckily, he had a sense of humor. When the runaway happened, it put out a huge cloud of smoke. The trooper asked me if I was James Bond trying to lose him with a smoke screen. Has anyone else had the experience of a runaway diesel?

Yeah, I had the same thing happen in an '80 rabbit. Pretty common in VWs until they started putting that poly-something tray over the cam beneath the valve cover. And yeah, puts out a real black smokescreen.

I had it happen to a Caterpillar 3208T. It ate the oil seal for the turbo, started to drink oil, and blew up. This one was an automatic, and there were two separate intakes, so there was no way to shut it down before it seized. As mentioned, man, what a cloud of smoke.

It started to happen with my benz when the turbo blew. But, because the oil feed line to the turbo was 90% broken at the time not much oil was going into the intake, so leaving it in gear and turning off the key halted the motor.

Just curious, would the emergency cut off under the hood (the 300 has a valve you open on top of the filter that lets in air) shut the engine off?

No, what you need to do is cutoff the airsupply. Big board over the intake is one way the mechanics do it in shops.

I had this happen on a OM 621-- 1959 190D where the accelerator linkage spring broke, the linkage fell off (it was being started for the first time after thrirteen years) and I stopped it by throwing a rag into the air intake, which worked in time, fortunately.

If the engine is running away on its normal fuel, as in the case of the linkage unhooking or a shut off valve installed incorrectly, you can also stop it by cutting the fuel line. Someone did that in the last couple of days and posted over on the diesel discussion.

I don't think this would be a problem with a 240....

For a 240, it's called "cruise control"...

Would a decent sized heavy duty trash bag being shoved into the air intake be enough? (So I can keep one in my trunk)

IF
The engine is a RunAWAY ,that Turbo is SUCKING AIR, HARD and FAST...
It might chew up and spit out a whole box of BIG Black Plastic Trash Bags AND still not stop!(PLUS,think of all that black Goo in the intake and cylinders) A nice stiff 6 inch piece of 2X5 lumber will not let you down.

Sorry to be blunt but wouldn't the bag never make it past the air filter?
