Angry Stupid radiator!

Well I bought a brand new radiator two years ago for my 87 300 SDL and I already need a new one because the trans cooler started to leak coolant into the transmission.

Where can I find a reasonably priced one? $320 is the lowest quote so far. doesnt include shipping though.

Its times like this that I count my blessings and remember that life is good.

Can't say much for your 87, but Phil hooked me up with a brand new Nissens for $280 for my 82 SD. Cheapest I could find plus the PeachParts support, can't get much better than that!

Any cheaper and you're looking at used or junkyard. What brand did you put in two years ago? Behr or Nissens and you should be fine for a long time.

There was a company called tigris international who made all brass radiators for mercedes cars. I am not sure of the models they made them for but I bought one for my R107 and it fit well and seemed much more substantial than the plastic/aluminum stock models. You might try calling them, I had their number as (713) 628-1362. See if they are still around and if they sell a model for your car. The one I got was less costly than a behr replacement and came with a lifetime warranty to boot!

I found someplace online that sold them for just a hair over 300 awhile back, through the google shopping search, put the part number in and search for that and it should come up. I saved one from a SDL at the yard last time because if I ever need one, I've found no one other then behr makes them to be had under $300.

What brand was the part that failed?

It was a Behr unit. Behr is the only maker of a radiator for the 300SDL. If you buy a radiator for your SDL with another name on it, that unit was made by behr as well.

I will definitely look into their products. I like the idea. I have never really liked the idea of plastic tanks on a radiator.

I tell ya I got pretty frustrated searching for this one. The cheapest I could find was $320.00. One conversation I had with a sales clerk really put the peices in place. He informed me that their is only one manufacturer of this part and therefore no competition. So it's pay their price or find a used one.

I dont like the idea of internal trans coolers either. It seems foolish to design a internal cooler knowing full well that the unit will eventually fail and what the consequences will be.

If it happens again then I will definitely go the external route. The only reason I didn't do it this time is because I had changed radiator tanks in the past with good results. This was the first and last time I will try to change a plastic radiator tank.

Cool FYI

Just to let you all know. The internal cooler failed because I over torqued it trying seal a leak at the fitting.

OOOOOPS!

It happens! If it makes you feel any better you are not alone. I had to replace my radiator after crushing the plastic neck on top by tightening the clamp too much. That was a $700 thermostat/flush job.
