Diesel Swap into 92 300TE 4-matic ?

Diesel Swap into 92 300TE 4-matic ?

Is there any reason this would be any problem?

I did a swap from an 84 190D 2.2 manual transmission into an 87 190E 2.6 automatic. One day out, one day in.

I am thinking that a 5 cyl turbo diesel out of a W124 or a W201 would work.

Thanks for your input.

The 4matic system requires the RF axle to go through the engine sump.

Difficult at best. Not sure that any of the 4matic stuff would talk anymore either, or if it is independent of engine sensors and computer.

Alrighty then. So that's a no, not one day out and one day in.

To bad. I found a local 300TE 4-matic for around $2k.

MB did make a 4Matic version of the S124 with an OM603, but shipping the transmission and sump over here would be prohibitively expensive. At least it would get better fuel mileage than the atrocious figures for the M103 versions.

Wow...aren't you busy enough with that 350SDL engine rebuild?

I've got a few days waiting for the tool from MB to tighten the pre-chamber collars, or remove and re-seal the pre-chambers, whichever... Other than that it is back together and driving.

Right now I am converting the 350SDL and a 300SDL to a 2 tank VO systems. But that will only take so long and then I need to get ready for winter. I hate paying for gas for the Audi 20v, though it has no problem getting up my driveway in the snow. So a 4-matic wagon on VO would be handy.

Maybe I will have to see if the oil pan is common between the 6 cyl gas and a 6 cyl diesel....

If you're driving a quattro in the winter now, don't bother with the 4matic, you'll hate it in bad weather (been there, done that). Awesome chassis, mediocre "AWD" system compared to the quattro. Really more of an automatic 4WD IMO.

So now I am back to adapting a MB 5cyl td to the Audi transmission....
Use the flex disk from the MB auto trans so the starter will work.
Make an adapter from the MB crank to the Audi flywheel. (the MB flywheel will not fit inside the Audi bell housing, and if that's the case why do I think that the flex disk will fit?? maybe it doesn't intrude into the bell housing?)
Make an adapter plate to mate the MB block to the Audi bell housing.
Make a couple of motor mounts.

I'll let you know how that works out, when and if...

The inline-5 Audi engine is an excellent powerplant. I'm happy to see that they resurrected it.

Too bad we don't get the selection of diesel quattros that Europe gets.

Sounds like 4-matic is not for me.

My driveway (trail through the woods) is a mile long. About 1/2 way in you go up the side of a cliff on about an 18% grade. As soon as you crest, the road slopes away and you must take a sharp right or you'll fall off the cliff. Not to worry, there are enough trees to keep you from falling 70' into the lake. Then you go about 400' and drive up the face of another cliff. When you reach the top you turn right and go up a hill to the house. You can get a run at the first 2 hills, but on the final hill to the house you only start up with what ever momentum you can carry around a sharp corner in the ice and snow, so, not much.

I've gotten real good at the "chains on, chains off" routine in the W201. But my wife's W210 drives me crazy. It is suppose to have traction control. What it has is "I give up". When the system detects wheel spin, it applies the brake to the spinning wheel to send the traction to the other wheel, which starts to spin, so it applies the brake to that wheel. In short order the car is parked, with you requesting more power and the car applying both rear brakes. Then I either put on the chains, harder to do on that car, not a lot of clearance around the tire, or I pull her up with the W201 that still has it's chains on. By the way, if this happens on the first hill, you cannot park on that hill in the snow. Once you stop going forward, you start going backward, even with all 4 wheels locked up. So now you are sliding backward down the face of a cliff, rock wall on one side, lake below on the other side. This only happens in the dark, snowing, with a 50 mph breeze off the lake.

I love to drive the Audi up the first hill at idle speed with the center and rear differentials locked. It will be interesting to see how well the 350SDL's locking rear diff works. It is suppose to lock up solid below 15mph and have minimum of 35% power to the wheel with the most traction. We'll see.
