98 E300 turbodiesel dies on hwy not K40

98 Turbodiesel just dies on hwy when driving. The bas light comes on and it has esp. Then it will not start just crank.

It is not air in the system. All lines and o-rings have been replaced and no visible air at any time. Then after it rests it will fire right up again.

Replaced the K40 and it did not do it.

Any thoughts?

Crank position sensor... Try buying some freeze mist from radio shack and spraying the sensor when it dies then see if it cranks back up right away.

If the CPS checks out, take a look at the SOV. They do fail and using SVO/WVO may induce more wear due to the thicker fuel. Absolutely certain there isnt a leak up underneath it; used your mirror and light to check, right? If its wet, it could simply be loss of pressure from a bad oring causing the valve to close.

The CPS seems to die with high temps so it is a good place to start. Typically they cause the engine to die and not restart until they cool off, then they restart as normal...I'd bet a nickel that will be it.

You did not mention it but do you get a check engine light or have you scanned it for pending OBD codes?

Yes, that's one code for a failing CPS. You are lucky, it is a cheap part and is relatively easy to replace.

This is the second such failure in 2 weeks on this board...I wonder if these CPS's are getting old enough that replacing them should be considered preventive maintenance for the rest of us?
