Next ..... 1979 300SD

Well, folks, I acquired this non running car today. It was repainted a few months before it stopped running a few years ago. At least it's been parked in the shade. That's a gasoline model in the background.

It'll buff out.

Nice interior?

So... does it need a motor? I wonder how much longer the car behind it has been sitting.

I'm anticipating the "before and after" with a buffer wheel.

PO said....

He had taken it to the Mercedes shop for a tune up and had just left the shop when it died. He could not get it restarted it; then it got towed by the city; then he got it out of the impound lot and just parked it.

Sheeesh.....guys. Do you think it's possible that it is just out of fuel?

The PO did have the car repainted about 2 months before it "died". I'm looking forward to seeing what's under the leaf mold, tree sap, wasp nests, etc.

if it just died out of the blue i'd expect clogged fuel filters (primary, secondary, or the tank strainer). Or maybe it did run out of diesel.

hey - keep that w116 running, please. they be getting rarer and rarer.

and, i know my truck seems to run better when it's clean -or is that all in my head? - though i imagine that might not solve all your problems?

p.s. don't think i would return to that mechanic? (for a "tune-up" - or anything else)

Ha ha on Reagan being president.....but it was before 9/11. I think the license tag says 2000 expiration.

Since I've got 3 617 engines sitting in donor cars, if it needs an engine, it will get one. It probably won't be a total restoration, but any rust I find will be treated with some type of POR15 stuff or look-a-like.

So, what do you use to clean "moss" off of a car???

Moss usually washes right off cars. Not hard at all. Everything that sits still long enough in Seattle, turns green too. More green, less black though. I think most of that's actually, algae and mildew - which cleans up easily too.

The black makes me think the tree above it has spit bugs.
They suck the sap, then poop out sugary liquid. Mildew and algae think it's yummy stuff.

Got to spend some time with "next" today......hooked up big battery with a battery charger\boost starter; checked the oil; checked the air filter (SURPRISE!!! BRAND NEW!!!! no acrons, spiders, or other creatures), hooked up a jug of clean fuel to the lift pump and opened the door. Glow plug light indicator works......turned the key and click and umph. Well, either the starter is stuck or the engine is "stuck". I removed the fuel injector lines but did not get the injectors out. That takes a BIG and deep socket.

So, I'm going to remove the injectors and squirt something into each cylinder and let it soak for a while. Haven't decided what to use......

I did notice something that I had not before.......look at the condition of these bundts!!!!

Here's the spare in the trunk; notice where I wiped the dust off.
