OM617 into a w201?

I have a gas 4 cyl 190e.

If i happened to find a good running 300sd parts car, how difficult would it be to swap the 617 into the 190e?

Not sure if that engine would even fit in the engine compartment.....might be a pretty tight fit....the hood might not clear the tall valve cover. Take some measurements....I've never heard of it being done before. And the 617 weighs quite a bit more than the M102....

is it that much bigger than the I6 or heavier than the 2.5 diesel that came in it from the factory? I figure using diesel springs, and maybe moving the battery to the trunk.

if it wasn't for clearance, are there any other sources of major difficulty? will it "bolt in" or would i have to make a custom trans member or adapters? If i were to do this, I would keep the 617 connected to its original trans.

Its quite a lot heavier than the 602....that is a smaller aluminum head motor. The 617 is one huge hunk of iron. Weighs about 600ish lbs

The height is too tall. That's why the M103 engines were slanted so they can fit in the W124/W201 engine bay.

The 602 is slanted as well, and a heck of a lot lighter than the 617. The battery move to the back would be negligible compared to the weight/dimension issues. You could always cut a hole in the hood

So what I'm hearing is...

I should leave my nice, decently functioning 190e alone....

Instead I should drop a 617 into the '82 Buick Electra (Caprice with more chrome) in my backyard that's in great shape aside from having no motor?

Transverse FWD? Good luck.

Find a nice Jeep wrangler or early land-cruiser IMO.

I agree, put it in a Land Cruiser! That would be awesome.

Front wheel drive? Not quite... think this, only poop-brown:

Same as Caprice, Impala, Delta 88, 98, Parisienne, Bonneville, etc... The basic frame and structure was still being used in the 90's "Bubble" Caprice/Impala. Mostly indestructible.

Full size, body on frame, read-drive, enormous engine bay, big radiator, and it was a factory diesel, so the fuel system and brake booster are already set up for diesel. It weighs about as much as an optioned lwb sdl, and the rear gear is a standard GM unit, so dialing it in for the power band and trans ratios will be cheap and easy. There is even a driveshaft shop near me that should be able to combine the 2 driveshafts.

I have to say an international scout or landrover would be cool but an old car like that one would be kinda neat too!

Sorry, wrong year for the FWD (fortunately).

It'd be fun, and you can stand in the engine bay with the engine while you hook it up.

That would come in handy at maintenance time! I'd like to be able to stand next to the engine to replace a starter or do valve adjustments etc...
