Cranking speed and start

Hello,

This car usually starts good first hit in the morning (cold sri lankan forests that's where I live) and drives quite dynamic for a diesel and very rarely there is an embarrassing situation where there is a "starting problem"

But this recently the car had been cranking quite slow, I had replaced the field coil in the starter motor and it used to crank so dynamically then so much that you could feel the car shaking when the starter motor is it operation just so fast but now it cranks kind of slow so it wont start most of the time especially in the morning, to day after around two cranks the battery went down and I was late to school the alternator charges the battery at 14.32 DC volts.
I had repaired the alternator too with a new stator coil, diode plate and a regulator.
My father tells me he got a load test done and they say that two cells in the battery are damaged but the battery is not completely defective.

Is it worth removing the starter motor and checking it do you think the field coil has a bridge i know its covered in black shellac the solenoid is good is it worth removing the motor.
Thanks Jeremy Brett

new battery...

hello,
from what you said, the battery is bad and should be replaced first.
make sure your connections are clean and tight including the ground connection on the body and motor. these are very important to proper cranking.
good luck and let know what works, or not.

"two cells in the battery are damaged but the battery is not completely defective."

?????

It takes a lot more energy to glow and spin a diesel than a gasser. Replace the battery!!

I'm no battery technician that's what the guy had told us thanks I'll look into the battery meanwhile do you think putting a relay for the plugs will help until we get one? its a cold cranking battery by the way

The glow plugs already are hooked up to a relay.

Slow cranking is a sign of a weak battery charge or starter issues. Since you state the battery is somewhat defective, it probably is a bad battery.
And since you said you tested the alternator and it is good, the next natural assumption is the battery.

If you must use it before you get the battery, try jump starting it. Once you get these diesels running they don't need any current from the battery to keep running. I drove 2 hours straight one time on a bad alternator. No voltage to any electronics but the car kept running!

Thanks, for all the links and help I WILL check them our for sure but in this car there was no relay for the glow plugs and my manual does not show it either plus do you think that the starter motor had a bridge or something and that's causing this, is it worth removing the motor?

Thanks Jeremy Brett

PS: Battery's for benzes come in din forum from what I know and for a diesel I think its best having a cold cranking specially since we live in a rain forest in srilanka and its extremely cold here, I use a 100 AMP Battery and they are not easy to find, no way of fixing the problem with the Battery?

And if you think a relay will help is it best having it for the preglow with the lamp in series or have it for the direct line that works while its cranking to keep the plugs hot wile you crank by the way they are the new parallel pencil type

Hi
it seems clear to me that your problem is a bad battery and not the glow plugs or starter motor

Mercedes diesels generally use a battery with 1000 cranking amps which is also 850 cold cranking amps - and with a reserve capacity of 155 minutes.

Cranking amps are how many amps the battery will produce for 30 seconds at 32 degrees F.

Cold cranking amps are how many amps the battery will produce for 30 seconds at 0 degrees F.

Reserve capacity is how many minutes the battery will produce 25 amps at 80 degrees F.

Good Luck,
Joseph
