Got A RATTLE Now!

I got my 240D about 3k ago with 236k on it . . . I did all the fluid changes, and tinkered with it, been just driving it!

Been starting kinda hard lately now that it is in the high 50's in the morning . . . (The glow plug light doesn't always come on, gotta figure that out) but it starts, but runs on 2, then 3, and finely on all four cyl!

Decided on my lunch break today to adj the valves! Took me a tad longer than I figured . . . but there were alot more things to remove than Diesel Giant mentions . . . I have egr! . . . anyways had a real tough time trying to turn it over, (I'm gonna "trim" the bottom of the rad shroud, so I can get a socket on the crank!!) I ended up needed to tighten my p/s belt . . . even when I got it tight enough to not slip, it still would only turn a tad then stop, like it was binding on something . . . I got in the car, and was gonna give it a wirrrrr of the starter, (to make sure I was turning it the right way!) when it finely dawned on me that it was in gear with the brake on! DUH!

Anyways after that it went pretty smooth #4 Exhaust valve wanted to spin, but I changed it's mind, all adj now! They were WAY TIGHT, after loosening the exhaust 1/2 a turn I still could just barely get a .017 through (I don't have a .035, so I put a .017+.018 togther!) Now it rattles or clacks away, much more power too . . . well for a 240 anyways, never knew what I was missing!

Gonna take it on a 500 mi road trip Friday!

You might want to do a search on that EGR to make sure it's not functioning...Temporarily of course.

just a thought. Did you set them with INCH feeler gauges or METRIC feeler gauges. The other thing is if you haven't done them before its possible something slipped and one is out of spec. Thanks

Your glowplugs are probably not working. Test them.

Doc, Thanks!

Yes I actually used INCH! No wonder there was so much clacking! It did feel like it was OK, but I tried a 0-60 last night and it was 2 sec slower than before . . . (28 sec! . . . of course we are at 4300')

I guess this lunch break I'll do them again, never did them before . . .

Yeah Kerry, I need to check on the glow plugs too . . .

Craftsman #40811

If you don`t have the metric feeler gauges, and or if this thread is being read by a new member months down the road.

The Craftsman part# 40811 feeler gauge set has what is needed for the Mercedes.

You should change out those glow plugs. It'll probably start much better. If the glow plug light doesn't always come on, then you have a problem with the glow plugs. Turning the engine by the crank should only require a 27MM long attached to 1/2 drive. Hope that helps!
