1987 300D shifting problem
So it always shifted rough but I never had this problem before! Once in a blue moon it would not shift to 4Th gear on the freeway, I would have to pull over restart the car and everything would be fine again.
Today I was going from stop light to stop light on the 2 lane freeway, and suddenly after one of the stop lights I lost 3rd gear completely, what's worse the car revved freely without moving! I had to pull over 3 times with the same issue and just as I thought I needed a tow truck and tranny is blown it started shifting fine again! I drove another 50 miles without a snag, just harsh shifting as usual. I am trying to get this car fully sorted out at the same time using it as a daily driver so I hope this is an easy issue to fix!

All the usual Suspects ?
1.Fresh,Clean fluid and New transmission filter? [Torque Converter, too]
2.Throttle linkages Clean and Lubed? 3.Transmission "Bowden" cable adjusted Correctly? 4.KickDown Switch (Under your Accelerator) ,Good? [Don't like the on again ,off again,on again scenario...]

Filter brand new with red line ATF, no leaks. As far as throttle linkage and bowden cable I will have to check that, I am good with working from the top of the car but not underneath. So I will have to figure out where the throttle linkage and bowden cable is) What is the proper adjustment for bowden cable? kick down switch good.

My 1987 300SDL was doing the EXACT same thing. For months, I wouldnt drive it, and one day, I decided to remove the vacuum line from the modulator, and cap it, and disconnected the kick-down switch at the same time. It's been a couple months now, and no problems. I ordered a new modulator and will be installing it because of the obvious very hard shifts. But after disabling both of these things, it shifts fine, and no issues.

How do you know the kickdown switch is good? They have a tendency to fail, mine was intermittent like yours for a bit. Didn't cause too much flaring but sometimes prevented shifting into 4

I recently had the same problem. After about two days of process of illimination, I found out that my kickdown switch behind the accelerator pedal was stuck in the down position. I disconnected it and everything works great! Infact, now it shifts better than ever.

Well it started doing the same thing today after a traffic jam on the freeway. It would rev freely after the second gear. I finally got it to go in to third and fourth.
At the gas station I went ahead and disconnected the kick down switch but still have the same problem. Now I seem to be able to get it into the gear by letting off the accelerator pedal slightly after it revves and then pushing it down again, it seems to then get into 3-4th gear again. Tomorrow I will be under the car looking at stuff! Wish me luck

Sounds like a piston or brake-band problem, hope for the piston.
Also look up K2 spring, could be that your flaring 2-3 shift is simply the K2 timing spring.

So do the K2 spring commonly go out?
It's so wierd cause it only happens after traffic or prolonged stop and go driving..

Ok was under the car today and took some pics
I checked the tranny fluid level, it was below min. I know , I should have done this first but didn't think of the obvious! So I added some.
I have a small leak on the back of the tranny from the pan seal, don't know how that's happening the seal is new. So anyway I slightly tightened the bolts again. I think what I took a picture of is a cracked vacuum modulator, please correct me if I am wrong, it's on the passenger side of the tranny. If it is, then it needs to be replaced, but how the heck would you get in there without dropping the transmission? Such a tight space has anyone done this? Test drove the car, hard shifts but it shifts to 3-4Th!! I think it's due to added ATF On the different subject now, first when I got under the car I noticed a black box wedged under the bumper, took it out and this turned out to be an ancient radar detector! Thought it was kind of funny, took a pic of it. It was not connected to anything. Another thing I noticed was a wire that was cut off, it's wasn't from the radar detector and it went into the fuse box, can anyone tell me what this wire should connect to?

That wire thats cut looks like the outdoor temperature sensor wire for the instrument cluster which does run back to a connector in the fuse box.. it is typicall located behind the front license plate (though mine was mounted on driverside bumper trim)..As far as i know referring to my 87 300d the modulator for the trans is forward driver side of trans not on the passenger side..hope this helps

That's what I thought at first too, but on the second look the temp sensor is in place and functioning perfect, so it's not that. On the tranny side of things, if it's not the modulator can anyone identify this cracked part? There are two wires or hoses running up to that location, one of them connects to this cracked part another goes a bit further.

I'm not positive, but isn't that 1st picture of the neutral switch on the transmission.
