Same with my "new" 97, unlike the earlier models. A bit disconcerting it is. And with a diesel, OP and temp are the only two you need. I miss it.

I was going to write that I wasn't too concerned about the lack of an OP gauge on my E300 until I looked in the EPC and was unable to find any sign that OP is monitored by the ECU. There is no OP sender listed anywhere that I could find. There is an oil level sensor but no oil pressure sender. I would have bet there was one but cannot find it. If that's true I would say installing one is not a bad idea at all. If the car already monitored OP then I would say it is a waste of time to have a redundant sensor but seeing how it looks like there is none now I am going to rethink this!

I always have an oil pressure gauge in every thing I drive. If you think about it, If you only have a warning that the oil pressure is too low you may not see a problem until it is too late. With a gauge, you may detect a 2 bar reading instead of 3 bar and you would know something is wrong long before the engine is destroyed. Same with a temperature gauge. It is like buying insurance, when you need it, it is too late to buy it.
Just my 0 cents worth.

You are correct.

Here's one from 2005:

I hope your E300 already has an oil-pressure warning-light.
As a practical matter, If the oil-pressure guage is in the console, instead of right in front of you, like it is on my W123s, it could be useless in the event of a sudden loss of oil-pressure. The best setup, regardless of where the oil-guage is mounted, is to have both a guage AND a light, as the light grabs your attention immediately, while you may not glance at a guage until after you notice something else wrong, like a loud engine rattle!

Happy Motoring, Mark

The E300's have an oil level sensor. At least for me, it woud be nice to have an oil pressure guage like on prior MB models. Additionally it would be nice to take advantage of this potential easy addition considering there is a place to install the sending unit on the oil filter base.

Now that is interesting, Iam always learning something new about these MB`s.
Strange MB forgo the OP gauge, thought all had them. The bean counters were at it again.

KarTek:

What did you decide to do regarding the oil pressure gauge?

I'm really slack regarding this project mainly because it is running along with my plan to replace the AC evaporator. Since the evap core is located like the Holy of Holy's under the dash where no common man can venture, it's taken forever for me to get organized to get the job done.

I do however, have the gauge panel in as well as the sending unit and oil filter housing adapter as seen here:

KarTek I have been considering a by-pass oil filter and don't know where to source the oil from. Where do you plan on installing your oil pressure sender, Thanks

There's a port on the side of the oil filter housing. As I remember, it's a 12mm o-ring fitting. I had to buy an adapter to switch to the 1/8" pipe thread sending unit.

I would have to go back and look at it again but it may work better with a 45 or 90 fitting.

It's been months since I took a close look at it.
