Struggling with a decision to put an oil pressure gauge on my '98 E300.
Folks,
I'm in the process of putting some aux gauges in the console of the E300 and I'm struggling to justify putting an oil pressure gauge in along with the others. I've always been kind of traditional when it comes to gauges and have always considered the oil pressure to be essential. However, on this car, there is already an oil level sensor and I'm sure there's also a pressure sensor and I'm also sure that the computer would raise Caine if the pressure dropped. Does anyone know for sure if this is true? My main concern for adding the gauge is that the area I want to mount it in would be quite crowded if I go with all 3 gauges. Two would be much more appropriate. At this point, the mounting location is not negotiable. Anyone have any comments? Thanks!

What other gauges are you putting in there? If your oil pressure gauge is electric, I would definitley put a mechanical one in. I had the oil pressure gauge die on me in my van so I put a mechanical one so I could keep track of the pressure. To me it was much more important than a voltmeter. I would have at least oil pressure and temperature as a minimum.

These are aux power gauges: EGT and boost.

I beleive that there is a thread on this somewhere, it's easy to add an oil pressure guage to these engines. I want to add one myself in addition to some other guages, for giggles, but don't know where to mount them in the car....

I am a huge fan of backing up almost anything electronic with an analog version. Hope this helps.

What about this: After initial setup and testing, I don't really need a permanent boost gauge. Granted, it's fun to watch but after the system is setup, it doesn't really provide critical information.
I could delete that in favor of the oil pressure gauge. I'll also do a paper template for all 3 gauges just to see how tightly grouped they would be.

I'd be happy to send you my oil gauge and if I can find it the sending unit. LMK.

Hey Rolf, thanks but I already bought the gauge... :/ Jumped the gun I guess... I didn't realize how tight everything would be until the gauges arrived and I started measuring.

It sits in my cluster being useless. I want to put in another boost gauge instead, pre and post IC.

Why? Really all that matters is the psi at the IM. Pre-IC is of little consequence, unless you are an IC designer and want to test the restriction of different IC's.

unless it's a race car.... you don't need an oil pressure gauge.
keep the oil fresh.... keep up on your other maintainence. and the oil pressure gauge has no purpose. one thing over time that has made me laugh... a porsche boxster... has no oil pressure gauge but a 911 does.... why.... (really what is it for?) there are plenty of things on W210's to keep you busy... you really don't need an op gauge. |

If nothing goes wrong, yeah, you don`t need a gauge. suppose the engine started loosing oil pressure, how would you know?
Knock knock, who`s there, Rod, Rod who? Rod knocker. I replaced my engine after the timing chain fiasco. Had 4300 miles on it, getting it broke in, running great. I was coming back into Santa Cruz from Felton on hwy 9 cruising along 30 -35mph. I had just come over the summit and was idling down the back side. I glance at the oil gauge, and it is at 1 bar fluctuating. I kill the engine, kick it out of gear and coast a ways to a turn out. this is about 8pm. finally got flatbedded home with AAA. next day I find the Turbo feed line cracked at the banjo bolt at the oil filter housing. Now, with out a gauge..... I don`t want to think about it. I think the gauge is cheaper that another engine. A buzzer and a BIG Red light might be useful too. Charlie

What is the "Quickest" Kill on your engine?
Oil Pressure!
(The caveat/disclaimer here is: If you've replaced your OP lines [Metal + EPDM] you may rely on an OP gauge.) Your MB Engine "Might" survive an/multiple close OVERHEATS... BUT...Just, ONE OP failure is Generally the Death Knell!

I'd use an electronic OP gauge instead of a mechanical one. A failure should be pretty easy to detect, and the risk of oil leakage all over the place is eliminated. That's one of the things I REALLY like better about my SDL over my 240. Not having to wonder when the oil is going to all leave the crankcase in favor of my dashboard.

What I need to so is find the pressure sensor and simulate a low pressure condition to see how it reacts.
