Am I going to regret this move?!
I'm going to look at 1991 350SD that appears to be in good shape with over 265K miles on it, rebuilt head, valves and replaced transmission, extra winter tires - looks like a solid automobile. Think the owner may be a forum member here...
I know these models have a reputation but after reading a lot of posts on the subject, I'm going on the assumption that since this engine has made it past the 200K mark it might be spared the dreaded rod bending issue... or is that too much to assume. I like the car and if I can see it this week I'd like to bargain for it. Is this car going to be a money pit?! James

I bought a '91 350SD with 510,000, I drove it for a year and 20,000 miles later until a head on crash destroyed it. I do not regret the purchase. But you know, with any vehicle, it's always a gamble anyway. There are two other forum members here with 350 SD/SDL's with over 500,000 miles, I used to be the third but the crash ended that. Just my opinion.

I believe the rod bending can happen at any time and is caused by higher-rev/high load driving.....driven "normally" it may not be as big of an issue. Could always swap in a different motor too if it ever died. I'd want it just for the chassis....the late W126's are awesome vehicles. I have a lot of the interior of a '91 350SDL in my '82 SD and its wonderful.

Engine swap options...
Would a 617.952 be a candidate for this model if need be?!

Yes, but it would be a bit more work than a 603. (Driveshaft different) and you would need the 617 transmission as well.

In my (less than humble) opinion; the '90/'91 SDLs were the best that the 126 ever got.
The engine on the other hand, very clean and driveable, but I don't think that anyone has conclusively determined the cause of failure, but keeping it from overheating and being sure that the head/gasket doesn't leak into the cylinders and possibly cause hydrolock. And if that fails, I have this 3.5L block here with good crank, pistons, and rods, ...
