what i'm saying is, for 5-10g's, you could buy yourself another very nice old benz, prolly with an excellent paint job, too
unless you're so rich that you ooze money |

So I am betting he will say he knows his car and is not interested in starting over with a different car no matter how nice it looks.

Actually, my "new" engine is used, but it took my 3 months to find a really good one (I should have just bought a re-man engine from metric for all the time/hassle it took. That's what I'm going to do next time.). I'm driving about 40K miles per year now (I'm driving from CO to NJ this weekend). From what I've seen, spending $10K on another W123 would still leave me with a car in similar condition to mine, but with many more unknowns. The last one I was temped to buy sold for $12K and still need a little work. At this point, I think I have replaced every moving part on my car at least once so I know the condition of just about everything. Within the last year I replaced the engine, the entire front suspension, the AC system (again), and a bunch of the usual nits (that's well over $5K this year alone). Over the last several years, I've replaced everything from the radiator, to the transmission, to the half-shafts, to the cruise control system, to the climate control (twice), to the alternator, to the starter, etc. The only major work I haven't done yet is the rear suspension, but it still seems OK. I haven't added it up, but I've probably spent less than $25K over the last 8 years on this car (not including routine maintenance). I've driven it about 350,000 miles, so we are only talking about $0.08 per mile for purchase and repairs. Overall, it probably costs $0.30 per mile including fuel and maintenance. I couldn't do that with a new benz (and I don't really like them anyway), and I'm not going to replace a car every time it needs a few $1000 of work. So my choices are to buy a series of lower mileage $10K cars in decent condition then get rid of them the first time they need $5K of work, to write a $60K check for a new one, or to do what I'm doing. The paint is incidental, just something I want to do to make it look better and prevent any future rust. At some point I will probably have the interior redone as well. The car is cosmetically in pretty good shape, but I don't intend to get rid of it so I don't mind spending a little money to make it nicer looking. |

Same here. I've owned my car since new and I know what it needs. I'd just feel better driving it if it looked better so I'm repainting.
Now about the question: Single stage or dual?

If its metallic paint it will look much better with the dual system.
