Metal tube under the air cleaner

Took off the air cleaner and found this tube under it. benzguy's site has a good picture of it

benzguy

its the metal pipe on 3rd and 4th picture on that page, it fits under the air cleaner. In my case it is loose, with nothing really holding it in place, and its dangling on the bottom.

I understand it is supposed to direct the oil into the oil pan. Does it mean it is supposed to be attached somewhere at the bottom? Mine just dangles in there... How to fix?

There is a 'nipple' on the underside of the air filter pan. When you put the air filter pan back on, align it so the nipple goes into this tube.

The oil drain tube for the air filter housing goes over a nipple that protrudes from the oil pan on one side, and a nipple that protrudes from the air filter on the other. There should be a gasket on each nipple, and if it's in good shape it should take a decent amount of force to get the that tube on to each nipple. That holds it in place pretty well. On the 617.951 in my 300SD, both of those gaskets were completely gone, and once I put new ones in that held the tube in place and stopped it from rattling around. The gasket is part # 006 997 26 45, you probably need two of them. It's also the gasket for the dipstick.

In addition, there may be a bolt or something you're supposed to use to secure the tube, but I'm not sure...

yes, there is a bolt to secure drain line

See this thread - I have posted a picture of the bolt that holds the line:

Good to know... something else for me to add to my 'to do' list.

Ordered the two gaskets from the dealer at $2.67 apiece.

Their chart shows a separate clamp that holds the tube. Maybe they changed the design for aftermarket repairs to be a separate clamp instead of a welded-on clamp. I ordered the new clamp too, just in case.

it is a clamp & a bolt ;)

the bolt is not threaded the whole length of the shaft so you can not over-tighten the clamp.

when you get into the project you will notice the drain line has a little wart in the tube while it runs horizontal before it turns 90* straight down to the oil pan. that little wart / flat spot on the tube is where the clamp will grab

don't worry - once you get in there it will all make sense
