Just another no start... no power?
Car in question- '83 300D with all stock wiring. Alternator and starter are fairly new (couple years on each but not too many miles and not too much corrosion in Southern California).
Anyways went to start and it seems that I have virtually no power. Example- the trunk light barely comes on and is dim. So I think the battery is dead but it shows a healthy 12.8 volts. The ground to the body looks alright and the hot wire looks like it goes down to that starter and then back up to the distribution block? It is dark right now and I cannot schlep a jack under the car easily but would that be the next place to look? Is there anything else obvious to check? My plan of action for tomorrow morning is to try jumping the screws by the battery and then check the connections at the starter... am I missing anything obvious? Thanks all. |

You need to see if you are getting that 12.8 battery voltage after the Car has sat not running over night.
It would also be important to give your charging Voltage when the Car is runing; especially right after the Car starts. Even when new some Voltage regulators barely put out over the minimum Voltage something ine 13.5-13.8 Volts. If any of the connectors (like the plug that plugs into the Alternator) are dirty or oxidized that limits the current flow even more. If you pull the Voltage Regulator off you will see that the Area under the Regulator is where the Regulator grounds itself to the Alternating Casing. That area need to be clean and able to conduct well also. When you said your Ground Strap looked good you did not say you removed it and checked/cleaned the contact area under the ground.

Many of the chain auto part stores offer a free charging system diagnostic.

turns out that it was the simplest solution... dead battery
I got it jumped and it started fine and a battery later and I am back on the road. I was a little surprised it was that since I have not been having any slow start problems but I guess a couple days of 100+ degree weather killed the battery pretty fast. Thanks for the suggestions though.
