Question Excessive Smoke and Vacuum System ?'s

Hello Everyone,

I purchased my first MB Diesel last May after I lost my trusty 1990 Corolla in a car accident. I needed a car fast and from what I had read, a 240D was the best I could buy with the little money I had.

I am very mechanically inclined and always wanted a car to work on and still drive to work everyday.

I finally got the chance to perform a Diesel Purge this week. Here's my first concern: after doing the purge and replacing both fuel filters, the car seems to smoke more than before the purge. The smoke seems more black than white.

Could it be a poor quality diesel? The day after the purge I went to a different station with cheaper prices than the one I always go to.

I'm also in the process of replacing vacuum lines, valves, etc. Could this have affected the emissions control system on the car?

Thanks in advance for any responses and suggestions.

Have you replaced the air filter? New filters may have increased fuel flow, enriching the mixture? Plugged air filters typically produce black smoke.

Makes absolute sense. Will try replacing it today. Thanks!

Examine the air filter first or remove it for a few minutes and see if the smoke lessens. Also the year of your 240d is important for smoking issues.

If an early version you have to examine the vent line from the vaccum pump for oil inside. If the vaccum pump diaphram fails oil is fed into the engine induction system. This caused the manufacturer to change the setup in later years of the 240d.

Try an Italian tune up.
