How much would you pay to have someone install a Wood Shifter?

Vehicle: 1987 300SDL

Scenario:

I found a great zebrano shift knob locally but I don't know how to install it. I've looked in the archives and can't find anything convincing enough for me to tackle it myself. On a scale of 1 - 10, how hard is it to install a new shifter on a W126? Tackled other jobs on my car like blower motor brush replacement and fan clutch and fan blade replacement, but how does new shifter rank up to those jobs?

Man is charging me $20 because he says it's roughly an hour job.

Deal or No Deal [for the installation]?

It's not a very difficult job.

The one problem is the capability to tighten the jam nut to prevent rotation of the threaded shaft. A crows foot is perfect........if you have one.

For $20.......just let him do it.

Are you kidding me? This forum is all about doing things yourself. This should take you at most, one hour. Pull the switch console off and everything will be self explanitory from that point on.

There's even a wiki article on replacing one. I can't imagine that the W126 is terribly different than the W124.

I guess it comes down to what your time is worth.

Your 87 SDL should be the same as my 84 300SD. I was just replacing the center consol today.Installing Black Interior from Parchment.

Open the ashtray, lift out the ash receptical. remove the two phillip screws. Pull the frame out, unplug the light and electrical plug.

Lift out the candy/trinket tray. lift the back of it, there are two tabs that fit under the edge of the wood.

Slide the wood switch panel toward the dash, then lift up. only rises so much, the wire harnesses will give some resistance.
Do not try to pull up on it before sliding toward the dash. the two pieces that hold it down will pull off or break. they are just stapled on and or glued.

You should see the jam nut, think it is a 15mm. then unscrew the shift knob.
