Differential apart, did they sell me the wrong axles!
I'm in the middle of replacing both axles and I just noticed the new axles Advanced auto sold me do not match the ones i'm replacing.
Advanced Auto says they are correct. Are they wrong? I think they are, I've read posts here about "can" style and the ones with the bolts. I have can and the new axles have bolts. Pics attached. In the middle of the job. Any advice? They measure the same length so I was going to try putting them in. |

They are probably the newer annular style. Should work.
See here: Contest: Advanced Auto parts $69.99 axles, how long will they last? |

The Homokenitic Axles look just about the same on both ends with the excption of the shaft that sticks out as in the first Picture.
The 2nd picture is indeed an Annular type Axle. The Manual has that you can use either one. However, I would check the part number on the box anyway. The new axles could be from anothe model Mercedes. Some people have reported problems with the Fitment of the Spacers when installing new imported Axles. In at least 1 case when the spacer was slide down the Shaft on the Axle it would not go up flush to the Axle housing but was held up on the radius. The member enlarged the hole in the spacer so that it would slide over the radius and fit flush.

I bought an axle from advance where the splines were differant and wouldn't work - they gave me a refund. Either the old style without bolts or the new style with bolts will work on most models. Joseph |

Any tips on installing the passenger side clip in the differential?
I have almost everything together and cannot get the clip back on! I'm going back to keep trying in a little bit. Thanks for all advice! |

If your really cannot get the clip back in and that side has a spacer; you may need a thinner spacer (Dealer item); or I believe it was fruitcakesa had his origional spacer ground down at at machine shop via a Magnetic Chuck and Surface Grinder.

Thinner spacer, exactly. I took out the washer from the old can style axles and with the new style it fits with no washer. Is this ok?
Also, now with all this monkeying around I messed up the right differential C clip. I need to buy a new one at the store tomorrow, any special kind to watch out for? |

Ok, job done! This was my first time installing axles, Thanks everyone for the help!
Lessons learned: If you are going from the can style to the newer style with bolts it might be impossible for you to use the washers. It was for me. Don't heat up the spacer clips with a torch while trying to get them on. Most of my anguish was because I didn't realize you the axleshaft wasn't sticking far enough into the differential because of the washers from the original axles I was reusing. Heating the clips was my own bad idea... Luckily I have an 82 240d parts car that I could pull some off from. One weekend later I have 2 new axles, seals, and fluid running smoothly in my wagon! Thanks all for the input and advice! |

I have a thread around here somewhere with a give away to the person who can guess my milage most accurately. Clacks pretty bad when putting it in go but so far so good. I replaced one when I did my diff because one snout was torn up before I put it in.
