Hi Mikhail,

So, the smoke is not coming from the exhaust? What color is the smoke? Does is smell like oil, fuel, hot brakes, antifreeze?

Line near the differential could be the return fuel line. Is it rubber? Not sure about the smoke. What was the source of the smoke?

If it was Brake Fluid you would lose part of you Brakes and if you look at your Brake Fluid Reservoir the part for the Rear Brakes would be low or empty.

As previously stated it could be one of the Fuel Lines. Perhaps dripping on the Exhaust pipe.

Also how about giving us the Year of your 240D

The 2nd drawing down from the top is the Diesel Fuel tubing/hose set up.
The 3rd tubing/hose is part of your tank vent system.

240D Smoking

It's not coming from the exhaust,it was coming from the front, eather the tires or under the hood it was like white smoke..when i was driving it started smoking it smelled like burned plastic,it was like white smoke, the engine was running good though and belt seemed tight...so im thinking it can be like burned brakes or something but im wondering why the line by the rear diferential was disconected..something was leaking, like deasel,im not so familiar with diesels, tiy guys know much more.

240D Smoking

Yeah it seems like its a fuel line, before leaving i topped it off all the way to the top..i mean top off the tank of diesel..well a friend and a michanik said it could have been some plascic maybe fell off and was rubbing on the tire but i checked and didnt see anything, sometimes he said on these older cars the brakes can rub and that can cause smoke, after standing for a while an officer pulled up and told me to drive the car off the road so it started fine and drove fine,i dont know what i should do,i dont want to take the risk and start driving it back again and it will start smoking,do you guys think i should check all lines, oils and antifreeze?top everything off?

Where are you located? Perhaps a forum member can take a look or suggest a good independent mechanic in your area to look at the problem.

If the engine is wet, can you determine what the wetness is? It is most likely oil or diesel fuel. Oil can escape from the oil filler cap and spread around, especially on the valve cover. Diesel fuel can weep/leak from the fabric coated return fuel lines running between the injectors. Excess of either of these can cause smoke if they hit a hot surface like the exhaust manifold. If the return fuel lines are leaking, I would suggest replacing these right away. That is a very inexpensive fix.

Hi,im located in Sacramento,CA but the car is in San Jose,CA. well it seems like there is just little wet where the glow plugs are,is that normal you think? i think it was already pretty wet when i got it and it ran fine and i test drove it ,no problems..ill try to determine what it is,i think its oil maybe when they were poring the oil into the engine shey spilled some on the engine but im not sure..so you sugest changing the fuel lines? how many lines are there?maybe i should change the fuel filter too while at it..Thanks for the HELP really appreciate it

I am just suggesting that you replace the small lines that loop between each of the injectors. Replacing all of the fuel lines is a much bigger job and may not be necessary at this point. Replacing the small return lines may eliminate the problem you are having with the engine being wet with fuel.

Replacing the Fuel Return Lines at the Injectors is a good idea. However, do not go to the regular auto parts store and get some Vacuum Hose that will fit as it will only last a week or to.
I Believer NAPA sells the correct fuel return hose, the Mercedes Dealer and the VW Dealers as it was used on the older VW Rabbit Diesels.

If your Enigne is like mine when I first got the Car it was covered with layer on layer of Old Oil and dirt and it looked like Oil had leaked everwhere.

It took several degreasings with many spary cans of Engeine Degreaser to get it clean enough to tell that in my case my major oil leak was caused by the Vlave Cover Gasket.

I would not jump to any conclusions about your head gasket yet.
