W123 300TD rear shock upper mount access

Okay, I read D. Morrison's thread on rebuilding the suspension on his 300TD, to include the rear shocks... In that thread he tells someone that to remove the interior trim panel which 'hides' the upper shock mounts that there are two screws buried in the carpet of the trim piece which runs between the wheelhouses.

Found and removed those, along with the three screws at the back edge under the lift-up panel (my 300TD does not have the third row seat).

Still can't get that trim piece out of the car. Need to remove to gain access to the upper shock mount, as one of the shocks is leaking and remove/replace is the order of the day...

Can someone let me in on the secret? Do I have to also remove the inner wheelhouses, and if so, what's involved in getting those out? Are there screws along the front edge behind the second-row seats as well?

Thanks in advance,
Dave

No One Knows?

Still looking for an assist on how to remove the inner trim panel to gain access to the upper actuator (shock) mounts in a W123 300TD...

Appreciate any help/guidance offered.

Thanks again,
Dave

I am pretty sure I have done it but it was along time ago. I believe though that if you are working with carpet you are too low. The top of the shock should be above the front of the wheel well and above the top of it. I suspect there is a plastic trim piece that just pops off.

You pretty much got it. However I am pretty sure there are 3 screws hidden in the carpet, once you get that last screw out you shoud be good to pull up that panel, under the panel you will see the screws for the top of the shocks and there are some rubber plugs to pull out to get to the hydraulic connections, just pulled a pair from the junkyard last week. Even with all the screws removed that trim panel can be hard to remove

There are a couple phillips screws in the carpet (about 3 1/2" behind the foward edge) that you have to remove to get the carpet out. Had to do a little prying once the screws were removed. Try lifting at the foward edge behind the rear seat backs. The carpet is glued to a piece of sheet metal at that point and the metal will lift up with the carpet attached to it. Once it's out you'll see the bolts & access plugs for the lines.
